2023 Sinaloa Unrest
The 2023 Sinaloa unrest began on January 5, 2023, following the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán, son of jailed drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, sparking a wave of violence in the state of Sinaloa. In retaliation for the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán, cartel members blocked highways with burning vehicles and began attacks against the armed forces. The Culiacán International Airport was closed by shooting after two planes (one passenger and the other military) were attacked by bullets. On January 13, the Mexican Secretary of the Interior Adán Augusto López Hernández declared that "order has been restablished" in Sinaloa. According to official reports, ten soldiers, a police officer and 19 alleged members of the Sinaloa Cartel were killed. The violence prompted the Mexican military to launch a series of armed raids using planes and helicopters to attack cartel members. Sinaloa (), officially the Estado Libre y Soberano de Sinaloa ( en, Free and Sovereign State of Sinaloa), is one of the 31 states which, along with Mexico City, comprise the Administrative divisions of Mexico, Federal Entities of Mexico. Ciudad Obregón International Airport
Ciudad Obregón International Airport is an international airport located 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) to the southeast of the center of Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico. It has one terminal with three gates and two jetways. There are two additional parking spaces for commercial aircraft. The airport is operated by Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares, a federal government-owned corporation. The airport first came under management by Aeropuertos y Serviciois Auxiliares in 1965 after the corporation was first created to manage airport terminals in Mexico. Culiacán
Culiacán, officially Culiacán Rosales, is a city in northwestern Mexico, the capital and largest city of both the Culiacán Municipality and the state of Sinaloa. Rubén Rocha Moya (born 15 June 1949) is a Mexican politician and educator who has served as the Governor of Sinaloa since 2021. A member of the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), Rocha previously served in the Senate of Mexico from 2018 to 2021.
