Events January * January 15: Original artwork of ''Spider-Man'''s first appearance in his black costume, by Mike Zeck, is auctioned at Heritage Auctions for a record-breaking US $3.36 million. * January 27: ** In Belgium new passports are distributed, featuring imagery from famous Belgian comics inside. ** A school board in Tennessee bans Art Spiegelman's '' Maus'' from its classrooms, which they claim is because it contains some nudity and eight curse words. The ban causes global outrage and sales of ''Maus'' rise. Comics
a medium used to express ideas with images, often combined with text or other visual information. It typically the form of a sequence of panels of images. Textual devices such as speech balloons, captions, and onomatopoeia can indicate dialogue, narration, sound effects, or other information. There is no consensus amongst theorists and historians on a definition of comics; some emphasize the combination of images and text, some sequentiality or other image relations, and others historical aspects such as mass reproduction or the use of recurring characters. Cartooning and other forms of illustration are the most common image-making means in comics; '' fumetti'' is a form that uses photographic images. Common forms include comic strips, editorial and gag cartoons, and comic books. The Adventures Of Nero
''The Adventures of Nero'' or ''Nero'' was a Belgian comic strip drawn by Marc Sleen and the name of its main character. The original title ranged from ''De Avonturen van Detectief Van Zwam'' in 1947 to ''De Avonturen van Nero en zijn Hoed'' in 1950, and finally ''De Avonturen van Nero & Co'' from 1951. It ran in continuous syndication until 2002. From 1947 until 1993 it was all drawn by Sleen himself. From 1992 until 2002 Dirk Stallaert took over the drawing while Sleen kept inventing the stories. Together with ''Suske en Wiske'' and ''Jommeke'', "Nero" is regarded as the Big Three of Flemish comics. The stories were noted for their satirical content, with references to politicians and celebrities of the day. With ''Nero'', Marc Sleen holds the world record of issues of a comic book series title drawn by the same author. Midjourney
Midjourney is an independent research lab that produces an artificial intelligence program under the same name that creates images from textual descriptions, similar to OpenAI's DALL-E and Stable Diffusion. It is speculated that the underlying technology is based on Stable Diffusion. The tool is currently in open beta, which it entered on July 12, 2022. The Midjourney team is led by David Holz, who co-founded Leap Motion. Holz told ''The Register'' in August 2022 that the company was already profitable. Users create artwork with Midjourney using Discord bot commands. History Midjourney was founded by David Holz, co-founder of Leap Motion. It first entered open beta on July 12, 2022. Zarya Of The Dawn
''Zarya of the Dawn'' is a short comic book written by Kris Kashtanova and illustrated entirely with the artificial intelligence software Midjourney, which resulted in a copyright dispute. Plot Zarya awakens in an abandoned New York City with no memories. A postcard from a person named Rusty falls out of their pocket, allowing them to remember their name and home address. After returning home and getting new clothes, Zarya meets Raya, their "inter-world assistant", who tells Zarya that a mental health crisis in 2023 led to the almost complete destruction of life on earth. Raya then takes Zarya to Zatura World, the world of acceptance. There, Zarya meets a mysterious woman and learns to accept their feelings. When they return to Central Park, it is covered in greenhouses. Zarya remarks that "acceptance is the first step of letting go". Bronzen Adhemar
The ''Bronzen Adhemar'' (Dutch for "Brass Adhemar") is the official Flemish Community Cultural Prize for Comics, given to a Flemish comics author for his body of work. It is awarded by the Flemish Ministry of Culture during Strip Turnhout, the major Flemish comics festival, once every two years. History Continuing the idea of a comics award given once in 1972, the prize was definitely installed by the makers of the magazine Ciso in 1977, "to emphasize and enhance the quality of Flemish comics". From 1979 on, the winner also got an exposition during the festival in Turnhout. The prize then changed from yearly to two-yearly. The organisation of the Award was transferred to the "Bronzen Adhemar Stichting" in 1991, and again to the Flemish Community in 2003, when a monetary prize of 12,500 Euro was added to the statue all winners received. Stripschapprijs
The Stripschapprijs is a Dutch prize awarded to comic creators for their entire body of work. It is awarded annually by the ''Stripschap'', the Dutch Society of comics fans, since 1974. The prize is non-pecuniary, but is considered the most important award for comics in the country. Brussels' Comic Book Route
Brussels' Comic Book Route (or ''The comic strip route in Brussels'') is a path composed by several comic strip murals, which cover the walls of several buildings throughout the inner City of Brussels, as well as the neighborhoods of Laeken and Auderghem. The large comic strip murals depict scenes from various popular Belgian comics, for instance ''The Adventures of Tintin'', ''The Smurfs'', ''Lucky Luke'', ''Gaston'', ''Marsupilami'' and ''Gil Jourdan''. The project began in 1991 as an initiative of the local authorities of the City of Brussels in collaboration with the Belgian Comic Strip Center. Initially, the project only intended to embellish empty walls and gables of buildings in the city. It then became an opportunity to celebrate the rich comic book heritage of Brussels, which claims to be the capital of the "comic strip". Bulletje En Boonestaak
{{italic title ''Bulletje en Boonestaak'' (later spelled ''Bulletje en Bonestaak'') was one of the first very successful Dutch newspaper comic strips, the first Dutch comic moralists, and the first Dutch comic translated into other languages. It ran from May 2, 1922 until November 17, 1937 in the Dutch papers Het Volk and Voorwaarts, drawn by the Flemish artist George Van Raemdonck, who had moved to the Netherlands as a war refugee in 1914, and Dutch writer A. M. de Jong. The comic appeared in 1924 in German translation and in 1926 in French as well (''Fil de Fer et Boule de Gomme''). A Dutch comics award for contributions to the development of Dutch comics, the ''Bulletje en Boonestaak schaal'' is named after this comic. Nieuw-Vossemeer
Nieuw-Vossemeer is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Steenbergen, about 10 km northeast of Bergen op Zoom. History The village was first mentioned between 1573 and 1576 as Nijeuwe Vossemaer, and means "new fresh water stream". Nieuw (new) has been added to distinguish between Oud-Vossemeer. The first village was established in 1566 after the land had been ''poldered'', however the land was inundated in 1583 to thwart the progress of the Spanish Army. The current village was built around 1610, and has the main street at right angles from the dike with the church on the end of the street. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1649 as a simple aisleless church. In 1849, it was plastered and a tower was added. In 1969, it was returned to its original shape. Tom Poes
''Tom Puss'' (''Tom Poes'' in Dutch) is a Dutch comic strip, created by Marten Toonder. Together with Hans G. Kresse's '' Eric de Noorman'' and Pieter Kuhn's ''Kapitein Rob'' it is regarded as the Big Three of Dutch comics. ''Tom Poes'' was a talking animal comic, published in text comics format. The main protagonists are Tom Poes, a white anthropomorphic cat, and his best friend, lord Oliver B. Bumble (''Olivier B. Bommel'' in Dutch). The series is sometimes referred to as the ''Bommelsaga'' as well. Toonder received many awards and honorary distinctions for both his illustrations and literary output. In the Netherlands ''Tom Poes'' became regarded as a work of literature. Marten Toonder
Marten Toonder (2 May 1912 – 27 July 2005) was a Dutch comic strip creator, born in Rotterdam. He was probably the most successful comic artist in the Netherlands and had a great influence on the Dutch language by introducing new words and expressions. He is most famous for his series ''Tom Puss'' and ''Panda''. Tom Puss/Oliver B. Bumble series In 1931 after his final exams, Marten Toonder went to Buenos Aires with his father. Here he got acquainted with the work of the well-known Argentine artist and editor Dante Quinterno, who ran a studio producing comics. Quinterno's creations impressed him to such a degree that he decided to become an artist himself. His most famous comic series were the Tom Puss (''Tom Poes'' in Dutch) and Oliver B. Bumble (''Olivier B. Bommel'' in Dutch) series that appeared in a Dutch newspaper from 1941–86. It has a very characteristic format.
