2022 British Speedway Championship
The 2022 British Speedway Championship was the 62nd edition of the British Speedway Championship. Summary The final was held at the National Speedway Stadium and was won by Dan Bewley. The original date for the competition had been 1 August but bad weather forced the cancellation of the event after 12 heats. Three riders had been leading at the time with 8 points each, they were Bewley, Tom Brennan and Chris Harris. British Speedway Championship
The British Speedway Championship is an annual motorcycle speedway competition open to British national speedway riders. The winner of the event becomes the British Speedway Champion. History Inaugurated in 1961 as a qualifying round of the Speedway World Championship it was open to riders from Britain and the British dominions. It was initially dominated by riders from New Zealand such as Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger because of the British Final forming part of the World Speedway championship qualifying rounds. Briggs and Mauger were multiple world champions. It was not until 1975 that the final was restricted to British riders. Countries such as Australia and New Zealand then held their own World Individual Speedway championship qualifying rounds. Sam Hagon (born 10 October 2004) is a motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Hagon started racing in the British leagues during the 2021 National Development League speedway season for Mildenhall Fen Tigers and won the league title with the Suffolk-based team. The following season he switched to the Oxford Chargers and completed a solid season, averaging 6.35. In 2023, he joined the Belle Vue Colts from Oxford and his good form saw him selected by Birmingham Brummies during the SGB Championship 2023 campaign. Drew Kemp
Drew Kemp (born 11 August 2002) is a British motorcycle speedway rider. Career In 2019, riding for Kent Kings Kemp won the Division 3 Pairs with Anders Rowe, the National Trophy and finished runner-up in the NDL Riders' Championship behind his teammate Rowe. He reached the final of the 2019 U19 European Championship. Kemp joined Eastbourne Eagles on 19 November 2019, for their 2020 SGB Championship season. It was confirmed, on 18 February 2020, that he would ride for his hometown club Ipswich Witches in the SGB Premiership. He was brought into the side after the suicide of his former Mildenhall Fen Tigers teammate Danny Ayres. However the season was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Henry Michael Atkins (born 2 January 2001) is an English motorcycle speedway rider. He currently rides in two of the three tiers of British Speedway, for the Oxford Cheetahs in the SGB Championship and the Oxford Chargers in the National Development League. Speedway career He was a British 125cc Champion and began his senior British career riding for the Somerset Rebels in 2019. After the 2020 season cancellation because of the COVID-19 pandemic he joined Plymouth Gladiators for the SGB Championship 2021 and Eastbourne Seagulls in the National Development League but Eastbourne later withdrew from the league. Jason Edwards (speedway Rider)
Jason Edwards (born 14 September 2002) is a British speedway rider. Career In 2017, Edwards made a number of guest appearances at reserve after he turned 15 as he was then eligible to ride. He made his National league debut for Lakeside Hammers on 29 September 2017 against Belle Vue Colts, he had an excellent debut scoring 9+1 from 5 rides. Edwards made more appearances for Lakeside and also rode some meetings for Eastbourne Eagles. In 2018, he moved from reserve into the main Eastbourne team for the first time, riding at number 2 for the rest of the season. Edwards also won the League and cup double with Eastbourne defeating Mildenhall Fen Tigers in both finals. Additionally he rode for the Cradley team that only competed in the National Trophy. Nathan Ablitt (born 3 March 2004) is a British Motorcycle speedway, speedway rider. Career On 20 December 2018, it was announced that Ablitt had signed for his first senior club, Kent Kings, and he would ride for them in the National League (speedway), National League for the 2019 season. Ablitt helped the Kings win their first-ever piece of the team silverware when they defeated Isle of Wight Warriors in the final of the National Trophy. On 15 August 2019, after sustaining some injuries, Ablitt decided not to race for the remainder of the 2019 season so was replaced in the Kings team by Jake Mulford. British Speedway Under 21 Championship
The British Speedway Under-21 Championship (also known as the British Junior Speedway Championship) is an annual speedway competition open to riders of British nationality aged at least fifteen on the date of the first meeting, and under twenty-one on 1 January in the year of the competition. The winner of the final is declared British Under-21 Champion. Previous winners include former World Champions Mark Loram and Gary Havelock. Format Sixteen riders plus three reserves take part in 20 heats with each rider facing each other once. The two riders which accumulate the highest number of points over the heats go straight to the final. The next four highest point scorers take part in a race-off, with first and second place riders also progressing to the final.
