2022 Arizona Secretary Of State Election
The 2022 Arizona Secretary of State election took place on November 8, 2022, to elect the next secretary of state of Arizona. Incumbent Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs declined to run for a second term to instead run for governor. Primary elections were held on August 2, 2022. Democrat and former Maricopa County recorder Adrian Fontes defeated Republican representative Mark Finchem by 4.8%. Finchem was backed by the America First Secretary of State Coalition, a Republican group supporting Secretary of State candidates who championed the far-right conspiracy theory that falsely claimed that Donald Trump won the 2020 United States presidential election. Due to a combination of Arizona's role as a swing state in the previous presidential election, Finchem's views, and the role of the Secretary of State in certifying elections, the race took upon an uncharacteristically high national profile. Adrian Fontes (born 1969/1970) is an American politician, election official, veteran, and attorney. A member of the Democratic Party, he has served as the Secretary of State of Arizona since 2023, after defeating Republican Nominee Mark Finchem in 2022. Fontes previously served as the Maricopa County Recorder from 2017 to 2021. Early life and career Fontes was raised in Nogales, Arizona. His family has lived in southern Arizona for more than 300 years, even before Arizona became a state. Fontes served in the United States Marine Corps from 1992 to 1996, where he taught a marksmanship course. He earned his bachelor's degree in Communications from Arizona State University in 1998. When he returned, he pursued a Juris Doctor degree. Arizona's 23rd legislative district is one of 30 in the state, consisting of sections of Maricopa County, Pima County, Pinal County, and Yuma County. As of 2023, there are 65 precincts in the district, with a total registered voter population of 121,771. The district has an overall population of 232,246. Following the 2020 United States redistricting cycle, the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (AIRC) redrew legislative district boundaries in Arizona. The Arizona State Senate is part of the Arizona Legislature, the state legislature of the US state of Arizona. The Senate consists of 30 members each representing an average of 219,859 constituents (2009 figures). Members serve two-year terms with term limits that limit Senators to four terms for a total of eight years. Members of the Republican Party are currently the majority in the Senate. There is currently 16 women serving in the Senate after Raquel Terán was appointed, making it the first time a majority of the body was composed of female members. Michelle Ugenti-Rita (born June 28, 1980) is an American politician and a former Republican member of the Arizona State Senate representing District 23 from 2019 to 2023.
