2020 Guatemalan Protests
On November 21, 2020, protests began in Guatemala City and several other parts of the country in response to the passing of a controversial budget bill by Congress in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of Hurricanes Eta and Iota. More than 7,000 protesters gathered in the capital city to demonstrate against the bill, which included cuts to education and health spending and increased funding for meals and expenses for lawmakers. During the protests in Guatemala City, social media reports showed a fire burning inside a window of the National Congress building. María Consuelo Porras Argueta (born August 23, 1953) is a Guatemalan lawyer. She served as Deputy Magistrate of the Constitutional Court since April 2016. She was appointed by President Jimmy Morales as the new Attorney General and Chief of the Public Prosecutor's Office to replace Thelma Aldana. Porras' tenure has been criticized for its backsliding in the fight against corruption. Constitutional Court Of Guatemala
The Constitutional Court of Guatemala is the highest court for constitucional law in the Republic of Guatemala. It is tasked with preserving the constitutional order by ruling on questions of the constitutionality of laws or state actions. The Court is normally composed of five titular or primary magistrates who serve five year terms. Each titular magistrate is appointed with a substitute. In special cases two substitutes are added to the bench for a total of seven to hear that case. Each titular member serves for one year as the president of the court. A guillotine is an apparatus designed for efficiently carrying out executions by beheading. The device consists of a tall, upright frame with a weighted and angled blade suspended at the top. The condemned person is secured with stocks at the bottom of the frame, positioning the neck directly below the blade. The blade is then released, swiftly and forcefully decapitating the victim with a single, clean pass so that the head falls into a basket or other receptacle below. César Guillermo Castillo Reyes ( : born 17 March 1966) is a Guatemala, Guatemalan politician and lawyer who is the incumbent Vice President of Guatemala. Castillo graduated as a lawyer from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala in 1998 and then completed a master's degree in human rights at the Rafael Landívar University. Castillo was Deputy Minister of Labor from January 2004 to May 2005. He also served as a member of the board of directors of the Bar Association and Notaries of Guatemala.
