2019 Dubai Sevens
The 2019 Dubai Sevens was the first tournament within the 2019–20 World Rugby Sevens Series and was the 20th international edition and the 50th overall of the Dubai Sevens since it began in 1970. It was held on 5–7 December 2019 at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Background The 2019 Dubai Sevens was the first of ten tournaments in the 2019–20 World Rugby Sevens Series with the tournament holding its 50th edition of the tournament with it being the 20th time that an World Series event has been held. For Ireland, they would join the series as a core team for the first time after winning the qualifier held at the 2019 Hong Kong Sevens defeating the host nation in the final by 21 points. 2019–20 World Rugby Sevens Series
The 2019–20 World Rugby Sevens Series was the 21st annual series of rugby sevens tournaments for national men's rugby sevens teams. The Sevens Series has been run by World Rugby since 1999–2000. In March 2020, World Rugby postponed all remaining tournaments in the series due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The events in London and Paris were postponed provisionally until September, preceding the Singapore and Hong Kong events previously postponed until October. On 30 June, the remaining four rounds of the series was cancelled which meant that New Zealand was awarded the title by 11 points over second place South Africa. Format Sixteen nations competed at each event, drawn into four pools of four teams. Following the pool matches at each tournament, the top eight teams (two teams from each pool) played off for a Cup, with gold, silver and bronze medals also awarded to the first three teams. Matías Osadczuk (born 22 April 1997) is an Argentine rugby union player. He tore a knee ligament against Australia at the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens tournament and required surgery before he returned to competitive action at the 2018 Sydney Sevens tournament. Lautaro (Anglicized as 'Levtaru') ( arn, Lef-Traru " swift hawk") (; 1534? – April 29, 1557) was a young Mapuche toqui known for leading the indigenous resistance against Spanish conquest in Chile and developing the tactics that would continue to be employed by the Mapuche during the long-running Arauco War. Levtaru was captured by Spanish forces in his early youth, and he spent his teenage years as a personal servant of chief conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, but escaped in 1551. Back among his people he was declared toqui and led Mapuche warriors into a series of victories against the Spanish, culminating in the Battle of Tucapel in December 1553, where Pedro of Valdivia was killed. Hong Kong National Rugby Sevens Team
The Hong Kong national rugby sevens team is a regular participant in the Rugby World Cup Sevens. The team's greatest achievements include winning the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and winning the Asian Sevens Series in 2012, 2014 and 2016. Their current coach is Paul John. Formerly Dai Rees was the head coach. The men’s and women’s Hong Kong national sevens teams were granted elite sport status by the Hong Kong Sports Institute on 1 April 2013, which means the HKRFU national sevens teams receive an annual stipend to be distributed to qualified players from the target teams.
