#2019GantiPresiden was a Twitter hashtag and social media campaign in which Indonesian users share their disapproval towards the Joko Widodo presidency. The main purpose of this campaign was a constitutional effort to replace the current president in the 2019 general election. The hashtag went viral after it was used by Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician Mardani Ali Sera on Twitter. In English, the term "Ganti Presiden" literally translates to "Replace the President." The use of the hashtag on social media provides users with an opportunity to share information and opinions about social issues in a way that others (followers) can interact and engage as part of a larger conversation with the potential to create change. The hashtag itself consists of a word or phrase that is connected to a social or political issue, and fosters a place where discourse can occur. Social media, provides an important platform for historically marginalized populations. Through the use of hashtags these groups are able to communicate, mobilize, and advocate for issues less visible to the mainstream. 2019 Indonesian General Election
General elections were held in Indonesia on 17 April 2019. For the first time in the country's history, the president, the vice president, members of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), and members of local legislative bodies were elected on the same day with over 190 million eligible voters. The 2018 West Java gubernatorial election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections.
