2018 Maryland Comptroller Election
The Maryland Comptroller election of 2018 was held on November 6, 2018, to elect the Comptroller of Maryland. Incumbent Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Comptroller Peter Franchot filed for re-election to a third term on October 5, 2017, and was unopposed for the Maryland Democratic Party, Democratic nomination. Anjali Reed Phukan became a candidate under the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party on April 20, 2017, and was unopposed for the Maryland Republican Party, Republican nomination. Franchot won re-election with 72.1% of the vote. This is the first time since 2010 Maryland Attorney General election, 2010 that the Democratic candidate won a majority of counties for any statewide elected office. 2018 United States Elections
The 2018 United States elections were held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. These midterm elections occurred during Republican Donald Trump's term. Democrats made a net gain of 41 seats in the United States House of Representatives, gaining a majority in the chamber and thereby ending the federal trifecta that the Republican Party had established in the 2016 elections. The Republican Party retained control of the United States Senate, making a net gain of two seats and defeating four Democratic incumbents in states that had voted for Trump in 2016. As a result of the 2018 elections, the 116th United States Congress became the first Congress since the 99th United States Congress ( elected in 1984) in which the Democrats controlled the U.S. House of Representatives and the Republicans controlled the U.S. Senate. The 2016 United States House of Representatives elections in Maryland were held on November 8, 2016, to elect the eight U.S. representatives from the state of Maryland, one from each of the state's eight congressional districts. The elections coincided with the 2016 U.S. presidential election, as well as other elections to the House of Representatives, elections to the United States Senate and various state and local elections. Maryland's 4th Congressional District
Maryland's 4th congressional district comprises portions of Prince George's County and Anne Arundel County. The seat is represented by Anthony Brown, a Democrat. The district includes most of the majority-black precincts on the Maryland side of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Following the 2020 redistricting cycle, it still remains concentrated in Prince George's County, but no longer reaches into Anne Arundel County; it takes over areas in Prince George's County formerly incorporated in District 5, including College Park, Greenbelt, and Beltsville, also taking an area of Montgomery County around Burtonsville. Joseline A. Peña-Melnyk (née Peña, born June 27, 1966) is an American politician who represents District 21 in the Maryland House of Delegates. She unsuccessfully ran for the United States House of Representatives in 2016, coming in third behind Anthony Brown and Glenn Ivey. Background Born in the Dominican Republic, Peña was raised in a poverty-stricken family who relied on public assistance and welfare programs. She moved to New York with her mother and sister when she was eight years old. Maggie McIntosh
Margaret L. "Maggie" McIntosh (born December 22, 1947) is an American politician from the state of Maryland. She was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1993 to 2023. She is a former Baltimore City Public School teacher who now chairs one of the six standing committees of the Maryland House of Delegates. A Democrat, she represented the state's 43rd district in Baltimore City. Early life and career McIntosh received her Bachelor's Degree in arts education from Wichita State University in 1970 and her Master of Science degree from the Johns Hopkins University in 1987. Peter Franchot
Peter Van Rensselaer Franchot (born November 25, 1947) is an American politician who is the 33rd Comptroller of Maryland. A member of the Democratic Party, Franchot served for 20 years in the Maryland House of Delegates representing Takoma Park and Silver Spring. He was elected comptroller in 2006, and has subsequently been re-elected three times. Franchot unsuccessfully ran for governor of Maryland in 2022, placing third in the Democratic primary behind Tom Perez and Wes Moore. Early life and education Franchot was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. He attended Amherst College, but later left to join the presidential campaign of Senator Eugene McCarthy.
