2017–18 VfL Bochum Season
The 2017–18 VfL Bochum season is the 80th season in club history. Review and events On 11 July 2017 head coach Gertjan Verbeek was sacked and replaced by Ismail Atalan. On 9 October 2017 head coach Ismail Atalan was sacked and replaced by caretaker Jens Rasiejewski. Rasiejewski's tenure as caretaker ended on 8 December 2017, when he was appointed as head coach by athletic director Christian Hochstätter. On 7 February 2018 the supervisory board sacked both Christian Hochstätter and Jens Rasiejewski. Heiko Butscher took over as caretaker. The club has spent 35 seasons in the Bundesliga. History Founding to World War II VfL Bochum is one of the oldest sports organizations in the world, claiming an origin date of 26 July 1848 when an article in the ''Märkischer Sprecher'' – a local newspaper – called for the creation of a gymnastics club. The Turnverein zu Bochum was then formally established on 18 February 1849. The club was banned on 28 December 1852 for political reasons and then reestablished on 19 June 1860. Ismail Atalan
Ismail Atalan (born 1 April 1980) is a German-Turkish Manager (association football), football manager, who last managed Hallescher FC. Coaching career Ismail Atalan started his managerial career in 2008 as a player-manager for the reserve team of the 1. FC Gievenbeck. In 2012, he became manager of Davaria Davensberg, where he coached until 2014. In November 2014, Atalan became head coach of Sportfreunde Lotte. In 2016, he led them to promotion to the 3. Liga. He became the new manager of VfL Bochum on 11 July 2017. He returned to Lotte on 9 April 2019. He moved to Hallescher FC on 25 February 2020. He was sacked on 8 June 2020. Selim Gündüz
Selim Gündüz (born 16 May 1994) is a German professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Berliner AK 07. Career On 31 August 2018, the last day of the 2018 summer transfer window, Gündüz joined 2. Bundesliga side Darmstadt 98 from league rivals VfL Bochum having agreed a season-long contract. His one-year contract was not extended after relegation in spring 2019. Gündüz then received a contract valid until June 2020 at KFC Uerdingen 05. Until matchday 11, he was regularly utilised in midfield and on the right wing, but was then demoted to the bench until the end of the season. The club did not renew his expiring contract. For the following season, Gündüz remained in the 3. Liga and signed a one-year contract with Hallescher FC, which was then terminated in mid-March 2021 for personal reasons.
