2017 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The 2017 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season was the 11th edition of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won by Lae City Dwellers, who were awarded the title by virtue of their superior regular season record, after the Papua New Guinea Football Association cancelled the playoffs and the Grand Final. Teams The season was the first after the league split, which saw 11 out of the 18 regional football associations break away from the league and form their own association. As such, membership of the league shrank from 12 to 6 teams, with only four – champions Lae City Dwellers, Madang FC, Besta PNG United and PS Huawei – returning from the previous season, alongside two debutants, Buang FC and Vitis Yamaros, who replaced Southern Strikers, who were due to take part but withdrew shortly after they failed to turn up for their opening fixture. Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The KPHL National Soccer League, also known as the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited National Soccer League for sponsorship reasons, is the men's top division of professional soccer in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league formed in 2006 by Papua New Guinea Football Association. It replaced the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship as the country's major soccer competition. In its 13 seasons, the competition has been won by only two clubs: Hekari United won the first eight editions, while Lae City have won the last six. The two clubs have met in two Grand Finals, in 2015–16 and 2019, with Lae City winning both. 2017 OFC Champions League
The 2017 OFC Champions League was the 16th edition of the Oceanian Club Championship, Oceania's premier club football tournament organized by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), and the 11th season under the current OFC Champions League name. In the final, Auckland City defeated Team Wellington 5–0 on aggregate and won the OFC Champions League seven years in a row and nine times in total, and qualified as the OFC representative at the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium
The Sir Ignatius Kilage Sports Stadium is an association football stadium located in Lae, Papua New Guinea. It was named after Sir Ignatius Kilage who was the fourth Governor General of Papua New Guinea. The stadium, which is part of the larger Sir Ignatius Kilage Sports Complex, features 500 grandstand seats plus an additional 1,000 bench seats. Yamaros FC, formerly known as Vats Yamaros or Vitis Yamaros for sponsorship reasons, is a semi-professional association football club based in Gerehu, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, founded around 2010. The club took part in one edition of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, finishing 6th out of six teams in the 2017 edition of the competition. Besta PNG United, sometimes known as Besta United PNG, is a semi-professional soccer club, based in Lae, Papua New Guinea. The side acts as the national development team of the Papua New Guinea Football Association, and is limited to players who are under the age of 23. The side made their debut in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League in the 2009–10 season, finishing bottom of the table. Since then, they have made gradual progress, with their best success coming in 2018, when they reached the Grand Final for the first time, losing 3–0 to Toti City Dwellers. Lae City FC, formerly known as Lae City Dwellers FC or Toti City FC, is a professional football club founded in 2014 and based in Lae, Papua New Guinea. The side currently plays in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, the highest level of football competition in PNG. Alongside Hekari United, the club is one of only two sides to have won a Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The side has also competed in four editions of the OFC Champions League, with their best result coming in the 2018 and 2019 editions, when they reached the quarter-finals.
