The 2016–17 Egyptian Premier League (also known as the Obour Land Premier League for sponsorship reasons) was the 58th season of the Egyptian Premier League, the top Egyptian professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1948. The season began on 15 September 2016 and concluded on 17 July 2017. Fixtures for the 2016–17 season were announced on 22 August 2016. On 29 May 2017, Al Ahly won a record thirty-ninth title and successfully defended their title with four games in hand following their 2–2 draw with Misr Lel Makkasa. Al Nasr Lel Taa'den, El Sharkia and Tanta have entered as the three promoted teams from the 2015–16 Egyptian Second Division. The Egyptian Premier League ( ar, الدوري المصري الممتاز), also known as WE Egyptian Premier League (WE EPL) after the addition of title sponsor WE, is a professional association football league in Egypt and the top level of the Egyptian football league system. The league comprises 18 teams and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Egyptian Second Division. Seasons mostly run from August to May. Unlike most other leagues, all games are played all over the week. The Egyptian Premier League was founded in 1948, unifying the local leagues that had existed previously. 70 clubs have competed in the league since its founding. Al Ahly have won the title 42 times, more than any other club. Their closest rivals, Zamalek, have won the league 14 times. The 2015–16 Egyptian Premier League was the 57th season of the Egyptian Premier League, the top Egyptian professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1948. The fixtures were announced on 20 September 2015. The season began on 20 October 2015 and concluded on 9 July 2016. Zamalek began the season as defending champions of the 2014–15 season. Aswan, El Entag El Harby and Ghazl El Mahalla entered as the three promoted teams from the 2014–15 Egyptian Second Division. On 24 June 2016, Al Ahly won the title with two games to spare after a 2–1 away win over Ismaily to secure their 38th Egyptian Premier League title. Al Salam Stadium ( ar, ستاد السلام), also referred to as Al Ahly WE Al Salam Stadium ( ar, ستاد الأهلي وي السلام) for sponsorship reasons following their acquisition of the stadium, is a multi-use stadium used mostly for association football matches with an all-seated capacity of 30,000. The stadium is the home venue of Egyptian Premier League sides Al Ahly and El Entag El Harby.
