The 2016 World Fencing Championships were held at the Carioca Arena 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 25 to 27 April 2016. Only two disciplines that are not in the 2016 Olympic program were held. Tiberiu Dolniceanu (; born 3 April 1988) is a Romanian sabre fencer, European champion in 2013 and bronze medal in the 2013 World championships. As part of Romania's sabre team, he won the team silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics and the team gold medal in the 2009 World Championships in Antalya. Fencing career Junior Dolniceanu began fencing at age 13 under the coaching of Iulian Bițucă at CSM Iași. The absence of his parents, who had gone to work in Italy, pushed him to train hard. Ysaora Jennifer Thibus (born 22 August 1991 in Guadeloupe) is a French right-handed foil fencer, 2022 individual world champion, three-time Olympian, and 2021 team Olympic silver medalist. Biography Ysaora Thibus is studying at the ESCP Business School. In 2013, she received the Bernard Destremau Prize from the Académie des sciences morales et politiques, which rewards a high-level athlete who combines competition and higher education. Thibus took up fencing at the age of 7 in Guadeloupe. At 17, she moved to France to train with the French national youth team in Aix-en-Provence, joining the senior training team in Paris a year later. Thibus competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Maria Valentina Vezzali (; born 14 February 1974) is an Italian politician and retired fencer. As a fencer, Vezzali won six Olympic gold medals and was a 16-time World Champion in foil. She is one of only five athletes in the history of the Summer Olympic Games to have won five medals in the same individual event. Elisa Di Francisca (; born 13 December 1982) is an Italian former foil fencer, Olympic champion in 2012, World champion in 2010 and three-time European champion. Martina Batini (born 17 April 1989) is an Italian right-handed foil fencer, two-time team European champion, three-time team world champion, and 2021 team Olympic bronze medalist. Career Batini first competed both in foil and épée as a child, then specialized in foil.
