2016 Tajik League
The 2016 Tajik League is the 25th season of Tajik League, the Tajikistan Football Federation's top division of association football. FC Istiklol are the defending champions, having won the previous season. Teams Prior to the start of the 2016 season, Khosilot Farkhor were promoted, whilst on 25 March 2016, the Tajikistan Football Federation announced that Daleron-Uroteppa had withdrawn from the league due to financial problems. The Ligai Olii Tojikiston ( Tajik: ''Лигаи Олии Тоҷикистон'') or Tajikistan Higher League ( fa, لیگ عالی فوتبال تاجیکستان, Russian: ''Высшая лига Таджикистана'') is the top division of professional football in Tajikistan. It is part of the Tajikistan Football League Organization and Tajikistan Football Federation. It was founded in 1992, with 8 clubs participating. The first champion of the league was CSKA Pomir Dushanbe. Currently the most successful team is FC Istiklol. Football In Tajikistan
Football is the most popular sport in Tajikistan, a country that gained independence in 1991. The national association regularly takes part in competitions organised by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation at senior and youth level. However, the country has not yet enjoyed any real success. While funds are limited, costs for travel and accommodation for international matches are prohibitively high. It is therefore extremely difficult for the national teams to gain experience, apart from in official competitions. History of football in Tajikistan Soviet period Football in Tajikistan started to develop in the 1920s and the Tajikistan National Football Federation was established in 1936.
