2015–16 Ethiopian Premier League
The 2015-16 Ethiopian Premier League is the 69th season of top-tier football in Ethiopia. The season began on 28 October 2015. Saint George SC were the defending champions, having won their 24th championship. Teams A total of 14 teams contested the league, including 12 sides from the 2014–15 season and two promoted from the National League. The two newcomers were Dire Dawa City and Hadiya Hossana FC. The teams finishing in the bottom two places were relegated to the National League for 2015-16. Muger Cement and Woldia City were the last two teams of the 2014–15 season and play in the National League for the 2015-16 season. Saint George SC are the defending champions from the 2014–15 season. The Ethiopian Premier League ( Amharic:የኢትዮጵያ ፕሪምየር ሊግ), known as the BetKing Ethiopian Premier League for sponsorship reasons, is the top tier association football league of Ethiopia run by the Ethiopian Premier League Share Company (formerly the Ethiopian Football Federation from 1997 to 2020). Established in 1997 (1990 E.C.), it replaced the former first division (est. 1944). Contested by sixteen clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the other secondary and tertiary leagues in Ethiopia. The Sidama ( am, ሲዳማ) are an ethnic group traditionally inhabiting the Sidama Region, formerly part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia. On 23 November 2019, the Sidama Zone became the 10th regional state in Ethiopia after a zone-wide referendum. They speak the Sidama language, which is a language of the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic language family. Located in the East Shewa Zone southeast of the capital, Addis Ababa, the city sits between the base of an escarpment to the west, and the Great Rift Valley to the east.
