800 Metres
The 800 metres, or meters ( US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Runners in this event are occasionally fast enough to also compete in the 400 metres but more commonly have enough endurance to 'double up' in the 1500m. Hannah Cockroft
Hannah Lucy Cockroft (born 30 July 1992) is a British wheelchair racer specialising in sprint distances in the T34 classification. She holds the world records for the 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres and 1500 metres in her classification and the Paralympic records at 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres. Competing for Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, she won two gold medals. She won three further gold medals at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. Early years Cockroft was born on 30 July 1992 in Halifax, West Yorkshire. She had two cardiac arrests after birth which left her with permanent damage in numerous areas of her brain, resulting in weak hips, deformed feet and legs and mobility problems and affecting the fine motor skills in her hands. Margriet Van Den Broek
Margriet van den Broek (born 30 March 1974) is a Dutch wheelchair racer. She won the gold medal in the women's 800 metres T54 event at the 2018 World Para Athletics European Championships held in Berlin, Germany. She also won the silver medal in the women's 5000 metres T54 event and the bronze medal in the women's 1500 metres T54 event. In 2014, van den Broek won the silver medal in the women's 100 metres T54 event at the 2014 IPC Athletics European Championships held in Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom. Liu Wenjun
Liu Wenjun (born 5 May 1995) is a Paralympian athlete from China competing mainly in category T54 wheelchair sprint and middle-distance events. Wenjun competed in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. There she won a gold medal in the women's 4 × 100 metre relay – T53/54 event, a silver medal in the women's 100 metres – T54 event, finished seventh in the women's 800 metres – T54 event and finished sixth in the women's Marathon – T54 event. Zou Lihong
Zou Lihong (born 26 February 1984) is a Paralympic Champion from China competing mainly in category T54 sprint, middle-distance and long-distance events. Athletic career Zou made her first senior appearance as a T54 athlete for China in 2010 at track meet in Guangzhou. Her first major international competition was at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. She entered four track events winning bronze in the 800 metres middle-distance race. As well as her Paralympic success, Zou has also found success at World Championship level. T54 (classification)
T54 is a disability sport classification for disability athletics in the track and jump events. The class includes people with spinal cord injuries who compete using a wheelchair in track events. They have paraplegia, but have normal hand and arm function, normal or limited trunk function, and no leg function. This class includes CP-ISRA classes CP3 and CP4, and some athletes in ISOD classes A1, A2 and A3. Definition This classification is for track and jump events in disability athletics. Angela Ballard
Angela Ballard (born 6 June 1982) is an Australian Paralympic athlete who competes in T53 wheelchair sprint events. She became a paraplegic at age 7 due to a car accident. She began competing in wheelchair racing in 1994, and first represented Australia in 1998. Over six Paralympic Games from 2000 to 2020, she has won four silver and four bronze medals. She has been coached by Louise Sauvage and trained with Madison de Rozario. Ballard held athletics scholarships at the Australian Institute of Sport from 1999 to 2001, and The University of Sydney (while studying first commerce and then psychology), and also represents the New South Wales Institute of Sport. She has been appointed by a number of organisations as a disability or sports ambassador, and currently sits on the board of Wheelchair Sports NSW. Madison de Rozario, (born 24 November 1993) is an Australian Paralympic athlete and wheelchair racer who specialises in middle and long-distance events. She competed at the 2008 Beijing, 2012 London, 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Summer Paralympics, winning two gold medals, three silver and a bronze. She has also won ten medals (three gold, three silver and four bronze) at the World Para Athletics Championships and four gold at the Commonwealth Games. De Rozario holds the world record in the Women's 800m T53 and formerly in the Women's 1500m T53/54. Personal De Rozario was born on 24 November 1993 and grew up in Perth, Western Australia. T53 (classification)
T53 is disability sport classification for disability athletics. The class includes people with a number of different types of disabilities including spinal cord injuries. People in this class have full use of their arms but have no or limited trunk function. Similar classifications are T51, T52, and T54. People in this class have a functional upper limbs, but limited trunk usage and limited lower limb functionality. During classification, they both undergo a bench test of muscle strength and demonstrate their skills in athletics. People in this class include Tanni Grey-Thompson (GBR), Samantha Kinghorn (GBR), Angie Ballard (AUS) and Richard Colman (AUS). Definition This classification is for disability athletics. Kare Adenegan
Karé Adenegan (born 29 December 2000) is a British wheelchair athlete specialising in sprint distances in the T34 classification. She was classified as a disability athlete in 2013. Competing for Great Britain at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, at the age of 15, she won a silver medal and two bronze medals. In 2018, Adenegan set a then New World record in the T34 100m at the Müller Anniversary Games in London, with a time of 16.80 seconds. Adenegan is one of the only T34 athletes to have completed the 100 metres in sub 17 seconds Adenegan is also the only athlete to have defeated Hannah Cockroft in a T34 Women's wheelchair race. (Once in 2015 aged 14yrs and twice in 2018 aged 17 yrs old). In 2018, she won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Award.
