2013 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 2013 Edmonton municipal election was held Monday, October 21, 2013 to elect a mayor and 12 councillors to the city council, seven of the nine trustees to Edmonton Public Schools, and the seven trustees to the Edmonton Catholic Schools. Two incumbent public school trustees had no challengers. From 1968 to 2013, provincial legislation has required every municipality to hold elections every three years. The Legislative Assembly of Alberta passed a bill on December 5, 2012, amending the Local Authorities Election Act. Starting with the 2013 elections, officials are elected for a four-year term, and municipal elections are moved to a four-year cycle. The 12 electoral wards are the same as that of the 2010 election; each represented by a single councillor. Of the estimated 619,138 eligible voters, only 213,585 turned in a ballot, a voter turnout of 34.5%. Jane Batty
Jane Batty (born 1946 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a former member of Edmonton City Council, last representing Ward 6. She was first elected in the 2001 Edmonton municipal election. She served on council to 2013. Prior to her first term on council, Batty served as both a management consultant and vice-president at Denny Andrew's Ford in Edmonton. Ray Martin (politician)
Raymond James Martin (born August 8, 1941) is a politician in Alberta, Canada and former member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Martin served four terms as an Alberta MLA and two terms as an Edmonton Public School Board Trustee. In 2018, Martin published his memoir, "''Made in Alberta: The Ray Martin Story''". An acclamation is a form of election that does not use a ballot. It derives from the ancient Roman word ''acclamatio'', a kind of ritual greeting and expression of approval towards imperial officials in certain social contexts. Mike Nickel
Mike Nickel (born April 27, 1965) is a Canadian politician who served as an Edmonton city councillor from 2004 to 2007, and then again from 2013 to 2021. Early life and education Nickel was born in Edmonton and attended the University of Alberta, earning a bachelor's degree in political science in 1989 and subsequently a master's degree in statistics and media studies. Dan Lee Johnstone (born July 31, 1987 in Edmonton, Alberta), also known as "Can Man Dan," is a Canadian anti-poverty and social activist, philanthropist, and author. Candas Jane Dorsey (born November 16, 1952) is a Canadian poet and science fiction novelist who resides in her hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. Dorsey became a writer from an early age and works across genre boundaries, writing poetry, fiction, mainstream and speculative, short and long form, arts journalism and arts advocacy. Dorsey has also written television and stage scripts, magazine and newspaper articles, and reviews. Dorsey currently teaches and holds workshops and readings.
