Jane Batty
Jane Batty (born 1946 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a former member of Edmonton City Council, last representing Ward 6. She was first elected in the 2001 Edmonton municipal election. She served on council to 2013. Prior to her first term on council, Batty served as both a management consultant and vice-president at Denny Andrew's Ford in Edmonton. Before finally achieving political success Batty endured several failed campaigns for election to council; in 1998 she ran in Ward 5 and in 1992 she failed to edge past Michael Phair and Tooker Gomberg Tooker Gomberg (August 12, 1955 – March 4, 2004) was a Canadian politician and environmental activist. Alberta
Alberta ( ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is part of Western Canada and is one of the three prairie provinces. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. 2001 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 2001 Edmonton municipal election was held on October 15, 2001 to elect a mayor and twelve councilors to sit on Edmonton City Council, nine trustees to sit on the public school board, seven trustees to sit on the separate school board, and seven members of the Capital Health Board of Directors. This election was the first, and to date only, election in which directors were elected to the boards of Alberta's Regional Health Authorities. After this election, the provincial government returned to appointing all members of these boards directly. Voter turnout There were 172,540 ballots cast out of 489,794 eligible voters, for a voter turnout of 35.2%. Michael Phair
Michael Albert Phair (born August 1950) is a Canadian politician, who served on Edmonton City Council from 1992 until 2007. He was the first openly gay elected politician in the province of Alberta, as well as one of the earliest openly gay elected officials anywhere in Canada."Gay politicians come out of the closet and into the cabinet". Tooker Gomberg
Tooker Gomberg (August 12, 1955 – March 4, 2004) was a Canadian politician and environmental activist. A native of Montreal, Quebec, a graduate of Herzliah High School and a liberal-arts graduate of Hampshire College (1980), Gomberg founded one of Canada's first curbside recycling programs in Montreal, and later moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where he created educational materials for Alberta's energy ministry and headed the EcoCity Society, an environmental agency. Political career In 1992, he was elected to Edmonton's city council. In 1995 he ran for re-election but was not elected. It is said his support for high-density development of the Little Brickyard in his home base of Riverdale lost him support among many of the people there. 2013 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 2013 Edmonton municipal election was held Monday, October 21, 2013 to elect a mayor and 12 councillors to the city council, seven of the nine trustees to Edmonton Public Schools, and the seven trustees to the Edmonton Catholic Schools. Two incumbent public school trustees had no challengers. From 1968 to 2013, provincial legislation has required every municipality to hold elections every three years. The Legislative Assembly of Alberta passed a bill on December 5, 2012, amending the Local Authorities Election Act. Starting with the 2013 elections, officials are elected for a four-year term, and municipal elections are moved to a four-year cycle.
