2009 Paris–Tours
The 2009 Paris–Tours is the 103rd edition of this single day road bicycle racing event and is organized by the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), which also runs the Tour de France. The 230 km event took place on October 11, 2009 and was won by Philippe Gilbert, the Belgium, Belgian rider for Silence–Lotto in 5 hours, 12 minutes, 23 seconds. Gilbert, along with countryman Tom Boonen (Quick Step) and Slovenia's Borut Božič (Vacansoleil), escaped with 7 km to go at the base of the Côte de l'Epan behind an attack from Gilbert's teammate Greg Van Avermaet. Paris–Tours
Paris–Tours is a French one-day classic road cycling race held every October from the outskirts of Paris to the cathedral city of Tours. It is a predominantly flat course through the Chevreuse and Loire valleys; the highest point is 200 m, at Le Gault-du-Perche. It is known as a "Sprinters' Classic" because it frequently ends in a bunch sprint at the finish, in Tours. For several decades the race arrived on the 2.7 km long Avenue de Grammont, one of cycling's best-known finishing straits, particularly renowned among sprinters. Since 2011 the finish was moved to a different location because a new tram line was built on the Avenue de Grammont. Chartres () is the prefecture of the Eure-et-Loir department in the Centre-Val de Loire region in France. It is located about southwest of Paris. At the 2019 census, there were 170,763 inhabitants in the metropolitan area of Chartres (as defined by the INSEE), 38,534 of whom lived in the city (commune) of Chartres proper. 2009 In Road Cycling
In 2009 a number of prominent riders returned to professional cycling. Ivan Basso, Floyd Landis and Michele Scarponi had finished a suspension. Bjorn Leukemans was without a team for over a year due to doping-related allegations, which were proven to be ungrounded. Most notably, seven time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong returned after a three-and-half year break, starting his season as a -rider in the Tour Down Under. The teams and , both who were connected to some major doping cases in 2008, saw their title sponsors drop out. The Spanish squad found a new sponsor in Fuji Bikes and was granted another ProTour license as . However, race organizer ASO did not invite the team for their races, and they did not participate in the Tour de France. Yauheni Hutarovich (born 29 November 1983) is a Belarusian former road racing cyclist, who competed professionally between 2007 and 2016 for the , , and teams. He currently works as a directeur sportif for UCI Continental team . Career In the 2009 Tour de France, Hutarovich was the lanterne rouge, or the last placed overall rider in the general classification (GC). On stage 2 of the 2010 Vuelta a España, Hutarovich surprised everyone as he jumped from the wheel of Mark Cavendish to claim his first Grand Tour stage win, besting other top sprinters such as Tyler Farrar and Alessandro Petacchi. Martin Reimer (born 14 June 1987) is a German former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally from 2008 to 2011 and from 2013 to 2015. In 2009 he was the unlikely winner of the German National Road Race Championship. In November 2011 he announced his early retirement from the sport of cycling. Pablo Lastras García (born 20 January 1976) is a Spanish former racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 1998 and 2015, entirely for the team and its later iterations. During his career, he recorded stage victories at the three Grand Tour (cycling), Grand Tours, winning five stages in total. He now works as a directeur sportif for the team. Francesco Gavazzi (born 1 August 1984) is an Italian professional road bicycle racer, who currently rides for UCI ProTeam . Career Gavazzi was born in Morbegno. In 2012, Gavazzi participated in the Tour of Beijing and won its queen stage leading to the Great Wall of China. Óscar Freire Gómez (born 15 February 1976) is a former Spanish professional road bicycle racer. He was one of the top sprinters in road bicycle racing, having won the world championship three times, equalling Alfredo Binda, Rik Van Steenbergen, Eddy Merckx and Peter Sagan. In the later years of his career, he became more of a classics rider. He has won the cycling monument Milan–San Remo three times, four stages in the Tour de France and seven stages of the Vuelta a España, throughout a successful career. Despite his diminutive stature, Freire was a good sprinter. He had a training philosophy where he rode shorter distances than most pro cyclists, sometimes covering only about half the distance his colleagues would.
