2008 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship
The 2008 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship is the current championship of the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship having commenced on 27 April 2008. There are 12 teams in the championship, structured into 3 groups of four teams. From these groups, quarter finals, and semi-finals will be played with a county final being played in either Walsh Park or Fraher Field. Ballyduff Upper are the defending champions having beaten Ballygunner in 2007. De La Salle won their first Waterford Senior Hurling Championship after an 11 to 8 points win against Abbeyside played in very bad condition at Fraher Field, Dungarvan. De La Salle GAA
De La Salle Gaelic football and hurling club is based in Waterford City, Ireland. The club competes in Gaelic games competitions organised by Waterford GAA board. The club has won the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship twice and the Waterford Senior Football Championship on 6 occasions. While having a notable record in gaelic football, today the club mainly focuses on hurling. History The club takes its name from St. Stephens De La Salle National School in Patrick Street and previous to the current club being established, fielded a hurling team under the name of St. Stephens. St. Stephens won 2 Senior County Hurling Championships, 1913 and 1914. In recent years the club has concentrated on developing juvenile players and now has one of the biggest under age setups in the South East of Ireland. Ballyduff Lower GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Ballyduff Lower, County Waterford, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Eoin Kelly (Waterford Hurler)
Eoin Kelly (born 24 September 1982) is an Irish hurler who played as a full-forward at senior level for the waterford county team. He joined the team in 2001 and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement in 2012. Kelly is one of Waterford's top championship scorers of all-time. He has won four Munster winners' medals and one National League winners' medal. He ended up as an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. At club level Kelly is a Munster medalist with Mount Sion. In addition to this he has also won five county club championship medals. He currently plays club hurling with Passage. Kelly has a number of personal achievements. Dave Bennett (hurler)
Dave Bennett (born 1977) is an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder for the Waterford senior team. Bennett joined the team during the 1994-95 National League and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the 2008 championship. During that time he won three Munster winners' medals. Bennett ended up as an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. At club level Bennett is a one-time county championship medalist with Lismore. Playing career Club Bennett plays his club hurling with the Lismore club in Waterford and has enjoyed some success. After enjoying many victories in various juvenile and under-age grades, Bennett broke onto the senior team as seventeen-year-old. Maurice Shanahan
Maurice Shanahan (born 1 February 1990) is an Irish hurler who plays as a right corner-forward at senior level for the Waterford county team. Born in Lismore, County Waterford, Shanahan first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Blackwater Community School. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Waterford minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 2009 championship. Shanahan immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen and has won one Munster medal and one National Hurling League medal. Bryan Phelan
Bryan Phelan (born 1979) is an Irish sportsman. He plays hurling with his local club De La Salle and with the Waterford senior inter-county team. Career Club Phelan has played from a young age with his local club, De La Salle. While not having much success at first, 2008 turned out to be a fruitful year. Phelan played a vital role in De La Salle's first ever Waterford Senior Hurling Championship beating Abbeyside in the final. Phelan followed this up with victory in the Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship later that year. In the 2008/2009 All-Ireland Club semi-final, De La Salle were struggling against Ruairí Óg GAC being a point down deep in injury time. Kevin Moran (hurler)
Kevin Moran (born 3 March 1987) is an Irish hurler who plays for De La Salle and formerly of the Waterford county hurling team. He is also a teacher in De La Salle College Waterford. Moran made his first appearance for the team during the 2006 championship and became a regular member of the starting fifteen over the following few seasons. Since then he has won two Munster winners' medals, two National League winners' medals and one All-Star award. Moran has ended up as an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions. Gary Hurney
Gary Hurney (born 1980) is an Irish people, Irish dual player of hurling and Gaelic football who formerly played for the Waterford GAA, Waterford senior team in both codes. Hurney made his first appearance for the Waterford football team during the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship 1999, 1999 championship against cork and immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen. He also spent three seasons with the Waterford senior hurling team. During his inter-county career Hurney has enjoyed little success. He was an All-Ireland runner-up in hurling on one occasion. He announced his retirement from inter-county football in December 2013, citing injuries and family commitments. Richie Foley
Richard 'Richie' Foley (born 22 July 1987) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Abbeyside and with the Waterford senior inter-county team. Foley usually plays at either midfield or in the half-back line. Career ;Club Foley has played at all underage levels for his club and has the notable achievement of winning county championships at every single underage grade. He currently plays at midfield for Abbeyside. In 2008, Abbeyside reached the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship Final. However, Abbeyside and Foley went on to lose the final to De La Salle. Mount Sion GAA
Mount Sion ( ga, Cnoc Sion) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Waterford City, County Waterford, Ireland. It was founded by teachers in the school of the same name. Although technically separate from the school, the club still maintains a close relationship with the school, sharing the same sports facilities in the city. The club fields teams in both the Waterford Hurling and Gaelic football championships and has had many famous players, including John Keane, Philly Grimes, Tony Browne and Ken McGrath. The club is mainly concerned with the game of hurling and is the most successful in Waterford with 35 county title wins, although they did win 5 county football titles back in the 1950s. Passage GAA is a Hurling Club with Club Grounds the East Waterford village of Passage East with Players representing the Club from nearby areas of Dunmore East, Cheekpoint, Woodstown, Faithlegg, Ballymacaw and environs. Passage came close a number of times to capturing the Senior Hurling County Title losing three Waterford Senior Hurling Finals during the 1990s.
