Gary Hurney
Gary Hurney (born 1980) is an Irish people, Irish dual player of hurling and Gaelic football who formerly played for the Waterford GAA, Waterford senior team in both codes. Hurney made his first appearance for the Waterford football team during the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship 1999, 1999 championship against cork and immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen. He also spent three seasons with the Waterford senior hurling team. During his inter-county career Hurney has enjoyed little success. He was an All-Ireland runner-up in hurling on one occasion. He announced his retirement from inter-county football in December 2013, citing injuries and family commitments. Hurney plays his club hurling and football with Abbeyside–Ballinacourty GAA, Abbeyside–Ballinacourty. Moycullen
Moycullen ( ga, Maigh Cuilinn) is a Gaeltacht village in County Galway, Ireland, about 10 km (7 mi) northwest of Galway city. It is near Lough Corrib, on the N59 road to Oughterard and Clifden, in Connemara. Moycullen is now a satellite town of Galway with some residents commuting to the city for work, school, and business. Although Moycullen and its hinterland are classified as a ‘Gaeltacht’ area, the language has not been the local vernacular for many years. Moycullen falls under a Category C Gaeltacht Area due to its low percentage of daily Irish speakers. Abbeyside Hurlers
Abbeyside () is a townland in Dungarvan in County Waterford, Ireland. It lies on the east bank of the Colligan River. History MacGrath's Castle was a notable landmark in Abbeyside, overlooking Dungarvan Harbour, until it collapsed in January 1916. It was situated at Friar's Walk in Abbeyside, near the Augustinian abbey. It was a six-storey tower house, reputedly built by the MacGrath family, and labelled MacCragh's Castle in the Civil Survey of 1654. While, as of the mid-18th century, it was still in a "good state of preservation", by the mid-20th century only fragments of the walls remained. These were subsequently removed, and no remnants of the castle remain visible above ground. Sport The local GAA club is Abbeyside/Ballinacourty GAA. Dual Players
Dual player or dual star is a term used in Hiberno-English to describe someone who competes in multiple sports — for example, in Victorian Ireland, cricket and hurling. The term today in Gaelic games typically describes a male player who plays both Gaelic football and hurling or, if a female player, a player of ladies' Gaelic football and camogie. The player does not necessarily have to play at the same standard in both sports. The number of dual stars at county level has decreased recently due to the increasing demands placed upon the best players of both sports. The 1999 Bank of Ireland All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 113th edition of the GAA's premier Gaelic football competition. The championship began on 9 May 1999 and ended on 26 September 1999. Galway entered the championship as defending champions; however, they were beaten by Mayo in the Connacht final. On 26 September 1999, Meath beat Cork by 1-11 to 1-8 in the All-Ireland final, thus winning their second All-Ireland title in four years and their seventh in all. In the process, they denied Cork the Double, the hurlers having claimed the Liam MacCarthy Cup two weeks previously. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands).
