2008 Jersey General Election
The Jersey general election, 2008 was a series of elections that were taking place in two stages in October and November 2008 in Jersey. Constable elections For the first time since 1948 the elections of constables for the twelve parishes of Jersey have been synchronised so that polling, where necessary, will take place on the same day as the senatorial election on 15 October 2008, in accordance with the Connétables (Jersey) Law 2008 (registered 28 March 2008). At Assemblies of Electors held in nine parishes on 17 September 2008, constables in five parishes were returned unopposed: St Brelade, St Martin, St Ouen, Trinity and St Saviour. The constables of the other parishes declined to stand down to recontest their seats, preferring to serve out their full term so that the provisions of the law will apply to the next mandate from 2011. States Assembly
The States Assembly (french: Assemblée des États; Jèrriais: ) is the parliament of Jersey, formed of the island's 37 deputies and the Connétable of each of the twelve parishes. The origins of the legislature of Jersey lie in the system of self-government according to Norman law guaranteed to the Channel Islands by John, King of England, following the division of Normandy in 1204. The States Assembly has exercised uncontested legislative powers since 1771, when the concurrent law-making power of the Royal Court of Jersey was abolished. The Assembly passes and amends laws and regulations; approves the annual budget and taxation; appoints the chief minister, ministers and members of various committees and panels; debates matters proposed by the Council of Ministers, by individual States Members or by one of the committees or panels. Sarah Craig Ferguson
Sarah Craig Ferguson ( – 14 September 2022) was a Jersey politician. Sarah studied at Manchester University, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering and took her MBA at Columbia University Graduate School of Business in New York City, majoring in Finance and accountancy with a minor in marketing. She worked in manufacturing, retail, finance, compliance but spent the major part of her career in finance concluding as a Senior banking supervisor at the Financial Services Commission. In her spare time she also served as a Constables Officer and later as a Centenier in St Brelade. . She was a member of the States of Jersey since 2002, and was sworn in as a Senator in November 2008. She lost her seat in 2014. In 2016, she was re-elected to the Assembly in a by-election triggered by the resignation of Senator Zoe Cameron. Ferguson died on 14 September 2022, at the age of 80. Judy Martin is a Jersey politician who was first elected as a Deputy for St Helier in the Jersey by-election of 2000. She became an Assistant Minister for Health and Social Services in November 2011. Ian Gorst
Ian Joseph Gorst (born 15 December 1969) is a Jersey politician who has been a Deputy for St Mary, St Ouen and St Peter and Minister for Treasury and Resources since 2022. Gorst was first elected to the States Assembly in the 2005 general election as a Deputy for St Clement. In November 2011, after his successful election as a Senator, Gorst was appointed Chief Minister by the Assembly. He served two terms as Chief Minister until he was beaten in a vote against John Le Fondré after the 2018 general election. From 2018 to 2022 he served as Minister for External Relations. Frank Harrison Walker OBE is a former British newspaper publisher on the island of Jersey who became the first Chief Minister of Jersey, serving from 2005 to 2008. Career outside politics In 1973, at the age of 29, Walker became managing director of, and acquired a major shareholding in, W. E Guiton & Co. Ltd., the parent company of the '' Jersey Evening Post'', the Island's only daily newspaper. In 1978 the newspaper moved to new custom designed premises and installed the latest print and typesetting technology. Over the next two decades the newspaper grew its readership, substantially increased advertising revenues and recorded steady increases in profit. Wendy Kinnard
Wendy Kinnard (born 23 March 1959) is a former Senator of Jersey, and was the island's Home Affairs Minister from 2005 until 2008. Jeremy Martin Maçon is a Jersey politician who served as one of the Deputies in the St Saviour No. 1 constituency between 2008 and 2022. Education Maçon was educated at La Pouquelaye School, Haute Valleé, Hautlieu School, and Highlands College. He has a degree in Joint Social Sciences from Plymouth University. Montfort Tadier
Deputy Montfort Tadier (born 28 November 1979) is a Jersey politician, and a member of the States of Jersey. Early life and education Montfort Tadier was born in the parish of St Helier in Jersey. He was brought up in St Brelade and educated in the island at La Moye Primary School, Les Quennevais and Hautlieu Secondary Schools, before gaining a BA(Hons) in Modern Languages from the University of Sheffield. Mike Vibert
Mike Vibert (1950 – 15 January 2011) was a teacher, Jersey politician, and the island's Minister for Education, Sport and Culture from 2005 until 2008. He has been past president of the Jersey Teachers Association, past vice-chairman of St Brelade’s Youth Club Management Committee, Procureur du Bien Public de la Commune de la Moye.
