Ian Gorst
Ian Joseph Gorst (born 15 December 1969) is a Jersey politician who has been a Deputy for St Mary, St Ouen and St Peter and Minister for Treasury and Resources since 2022. Gorst was first elected to the States Assembly in the 2005 general election as a Deputy for St Clement. In November 2011, after his successful election as a Senator, Gorst was appointed Chief Minister by the Assembly. He served two terms as Chief Minister until he was beaten in a vote against John Le Fondré after the 2018 general election. From 2018 to 2022 he served as Minister for External Relations. Born in Lancashire, Gorst worked as an accountant before going into politics after moving to Jersey. States Assembly
The States Assembly (french: Assemblée des États; Jèrriais: ) is the parliament of Jersey, formed of the island's 37 deputies and the Connétable of each of the twelve parishes. The origins of the legislature of Jersey lie in the system of self-government according to Norman law guaranteed to the Channel Islands by John, King of England, following the division of Normandy in 1204. The States Assembly has exercised uncontested legislative powers since 1771, when the concurrent law-making power of the Royal Court of Jersey was abolished. Saint Clement, Jersey
St Clement (Jèrriais: ''Saint Cliément'') is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey in the Channel Islands. Its parish hall is around south-east of St Helier. The parish has a population of 9,221 and is the second most densely populated. Located on the south-east coast of the island, stretching from Le Dicq in the west to near La Rocque in the east, it is the smallest parish, with a surface area of just 2,440 vergées (4 km2). The parish is largely suburbanised, with a large spread of post-war low-density housing development. There is no easily definable centre to the parish. The parish hall, schools and church are located in different areas. The parish is also home to a number of sports facilities, such as FB Fields and St Clement's Golf Club. GCE Advanced Level (United Kingdom)
The General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level, or A Level, is a main school leaving qualification in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. It is available as an alternative qualification in other countries. Students generally study for A levels over a two-year period. Lune Valley
The River Lune (archaically sometimes Loyne) is a river in length in Cumbria and Lancashire, England. Etymology Several elucidations for the origin of the name ''Lune'' exist. Firstly, it may be that the name is Brittonic in genesis and derived from ''*lǭn'' meaning "full, abundant", or "healthy, pure" (c.f. Old Irish ''slán'', Welsh ''llawn''). 2018 Jersey General Election
The 2018 Jersey general election was held on 16 May 2018 to elect the 49 members of the States Assembly. Electoral system At the time of the election, the 49 members of the States consisted of three different types of members. The 29 deputies were elected from 18 districts; nine districts elected one deputy, five districts elected two deputies, two districts elected three deputies, and two districts elected four deputies, with voters able to cast as many votes as there were seats in their district. The 12 constables were elected from each of the 12 parishes, although only one didn't get elected unopposed, whilst the eight senators are elected on an island-wide basis, with each voter casting up to eight votes. 2022 Jersey General Election
The 2022 Jersey general election was held on 22 June 2022 to elect Connétables and deputies to the States Assembly. As in previous elections, the majority of seats were won by independents. The governing Jersey Alliance party suffered a heavy defeat, losing all but one of its seats. Following the election, a coalition government led by Better Way Deputy Kristina Moore was formed. Independent politicians won 32 of the 49 seats in the Assembly. Reform Jersey won 10 seats, primarily in the new St Helier constituencies, the largest win in the party's history. Whilst Jersey Alliance won a sizable share of the popular vote, it only won a single seat; almost all of its members in the Assembly were voted out, most notably the incumbent Chief Minister John Le Fondré.
