2006–07 Liga I
The 2006–07 Liga I was the eighty-ninth season of Liga I, the top-level football league of Romania. Season began on 28 July 2006 and ended on 23 May 2007. Teams Eighteen teams played in the 2006–07 season. Four teams were from Moldova, four clubs from Transylvania, one from Dobruja and nine from Wallachia four of them coming from the country's capital city Bucharest. Pandurii Târgu Jiu had been relegated at the end of the previous season but they re-entered Liga I at the expense of Sportul Studenţesc which has been relegated to Liga II due to financial problems. They relegated together with FC Bacău, who finished 16th last season. The other four new teams which gained access to Liga I were Ceahlăul Piatra Neamţ and Universitatea Craiova (both winning two of the three series of Liga II), plus Unirea Urziceni (winning the playoff for Liga I) and UTA Arad which bought the place from Liberty Salonta (winner of the third series of Liga II). Liga I
The Liga I (; ''First League''), also spelled as Liga 1, is a Romanian professional league for men's association football clubs. Currently sponsored by betting company Superbet, it is officially known as the SuperLiga. It is the country's top football competition, being contested by 16 clubs which take part in a promotion and relegation system with the Liga II. The teams play 30 matches each in the regular season, before entering the championship play-offs or the relegation play-outs according to their position in the regular table. The Liga I was established in 1909 and commenced play for the 1909–10 campaign, being currently on the 29th place in UEFA's league coefficient ranking list. It is administered by the Liga Profesionistă de Fotbal, also known by the acronym LPF. Before the 2006–07 season, the competition was known as ''Divizia A'', but the name had to be changed following the finding that someone else had registered that trademark. CSM Jiul Petroșani
Clubul Sportiv Municipal Jiul Petroșani, commonly known as Jiul Petroșani, simply as Jiul, is a professional football (soccer), football football team, club based in Petroșani, Hunedoara County, founded in 1919 under the name of ''CAM Petroșani''. Jiul Petroșani is one of the oldest clubs in Romania that is still active. Founded before teams such as CSA Steaua București (football), Steaua București, FC Dinamo București, Dinamo București or FC Rapid București, Rapid București, Jiul, at its best, was ranked 2nd (1924–25 Divizia A, 1924–25) in the top-flight, but despite the ups and downs, Jiul was for most of its existence, a constant presence in the first two tiers of the Romanian football league system, fact that made it a traditional club in the country. Liga II
The Liga 2, most often spelled as Liga II, is the second level of the Romanian football league system. The league changed its name from Divizia B just before the start of the 2006–07 Liga II, 2006–07. It is currently Sponsor (commercial), sponsored by Casa Pariurilor, a betting company with the official name Liga 2 Casa Pariurilor. Format Divisions Since its inception in 1934, Liga II had between 2 and 9 parallel divisions, with clubs divided based on geographic regions. Generally, Seria I included eastern teams while Seria II included western sides, although clubs near the center of the country are allowed to choose in which series they will compete. The first six teams from each series participate in a play-off for potential promotion to Liga I. Pandurii Târgu Jiu
The uprising of 1821 was a social and political rebellion in Wallachia, which was at the time a tributary state of the Ottoman Empire. It originated as a movement against the Phanariote administration, with backing from the more conservative boyars, but mutated into an attempted removal of the boyar class. Though not directed against Ottoman rule, the revolt espoused an early version of Romanian nationalism, and is described by historians as the first major event of a national awakening. The revolutionary force was centered on a group of Pandur irregulars, whose leader was Tudor Vladimirescu. Its nucleus was the Wallachian subregion of Oltenia, where Vladimirescu established his "Assembly of the People" in February. Bucharest
Bucharest ( , ; ro, București ) is the capital and largest city of Romania, as well as its cultural, industrial, and financial centre. Wallachia
Wallachia or Walachia (; ro, Țara Românească, lit=The Romanian Land' or 'The Romanian Country, ; archaic: ', Romanian Cyrillic alphabet: ) is a historical and geographical region of Romania. Northern Dobruja
Northern Dobruja ( ro, Dobrogea de Nord or simply ; bg, Северна Добруджа, ''Severna Dobrudzha'') is the part of Dobruja within the borders of Romania. It lies between the lower Danube river and the Black Sea, bordered in the south by Southern Dobruja, which is part of Bulgaria. Transylvania
