2005 Maccabiah Games
The 17th Maccabiah Games ( he, המכביה ה-17 ישראל תשס"ה), held in Israel, were an incarnation of the 'Jewish Olympics.' They attracted the largest attendance of any Maccabiah Games, including more than 900 representatives from the United States, almost 500 from Australia, and more than 2,000 from Israel, bringing the total participants to more than 7,700 from 55 countries. Israel ended the games at the top of the medal count with 228 gold medals. The United States was second with 71 gold medals, while Russia came in third with 15. Sergey Sharikov
Sergey Aleksandrovich Sharikov (russian: Сергей Александрович Шариков, 18 June 1974 – 6 June 2015), also known as Serguei/Sergei Charikov, was a left-handed Russian Olympic champion sabre fencer. In the Olympics he won two gold medals, a silver medal, and a bronze medal. Early life Sharikov was born in Moscow, Russia, and was Jewish. Julia Glushko (or Yulia, he, יוליה גלושקו; born 1 January 1990) is an Israeli retired tennis player. She won 11 singles and 14 doubles titles on the ITF Circuit. Her best results at a Grand Slam tournament were reaching the third round of the US Open in 2013, and the French Open in 2014 in singles. Sharon Fichman ( ; born December 3, 1990) is a Canadian-Israeli inactive tennis player. In 2004, at the age of 13, she was Canada's Under-18 Indoor & Outdoor National girls' champion, and also won the doubles title. In 2005, Fichman won the gold medal in women's singles at the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel, at the age of 14. In 2006, Fichman won the Australian Open and French Open junior doubles championships. Michael "Mickey" Halika ( he, מיכאל "מיקי" חליקה; born November 11, 1978 in Jerusalem) is a former Israeli swimmer. Swimming career Despite being of Israeli nationality he won the 400 metres medley titles in 1996 and 1999 at the ASA National British Championships. At the 1997 Maccabiah Games, he won gold medals in 800 m freestyle and 400 m medley in the juniors. Yoav Gath ( he, יואב גת; born November 8, 1980) is an Olympic and national-record backstroke swimmer from Israel. He swam for Israel at the 2000 Olympics. Biography Yoav Gath was born in Haifa. He trained at Hapoel Kiryat-Tivon swimming club coached by Andre Tot. At age 15 he relocated to the Academy for Sport Excellence at the Wingate Institute, coached by Leonid Kaufman and joined Hapoel Jerusalem swimming club. Daniel Lawrence Madwed (born March 15, 1989) is an American swimmer. Career Madwed was born in Stamford, Connecticut. He swam in the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Jerusalem, Israel. He won a gold medal and set a new Maccabiah Games record in the men's 200-meter butterfly. He competed at the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, British Columbia, and was the youngest American male swimmer at the event. He placed 10th in the 200 m butterfly, 15th in the 100 m butterfly, and 15th in the 200 m individual medley. Scott Daniel Goldblatt (born July 12, 1979) is an American former competition swimmer and Olympic gold medalist who specialized in freestyle events. While swimming primarily in the lead position of the 4 x 200 freestyle relay, Goldblatt took a gold and silver in the 2000, and 2004 Olympics and a silver and bronze medal in the 2001 and 2003 World Aquatics Championships. Soren Hunter Miles Sussman Thompson (born May 5, 1981) is an American épée fencer, team world champion, and two-time Olympian. He represented the United States in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, where he reached the quarterfinals and came in 7th, the best US result in the event since 1956 and at the time the second-best US result of all-time. He also represented the US in the 2012 Olympics in London. Thompson won a gold medal and world championship in the team épée event at the 2012 World Fencing Championships.
