Western Conference (NHL)
The Western Conference (french: Conférence de l'Ouest) is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference. History Originally named the Clarence Campbell Conference (or Campbell Conference for short), it was created in 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The conferences and divisions were re-aligned in 1981 to better reflect the geographical locations of the teams, but the existing names were retained with the Campbell Conference becoming the conference for the NHL's westernmost teams. The names of conferences and divisions were changed in 1993 to reflect their geographic locations. Wade Flaherty
Wade Flaherty (born January 11, 1968) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender who has played in the National Hockey League for the San Jose Sharks, New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, and the Nashville Predators, as well as several teams in the American Hockey League and ECHL. He last played professionally for the China Sharks of the Asia League Ice Hockey, before being named the developmental goaltending coach for the Chicago Blackhawks. Flaherty was drafted 181st overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. While playing with the Islanders, Flaherty was the last NHL goalie to give up a goal to Wayne Gretzky. Flaherty backed up Curtis Joseph for Team Canada in the 2007 Spengler Cup. Geoff Sanderson
Geoffrey M. Sanderson (born February 1, 1972) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger, most notably for the Hartford Whalers and Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL). Playing career Drafted by the Hartford Whalers 36th overall in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Sanderson made his NHL debut at the tail end of the 1990–91 season with the Whalers. He was on the roster for their first round playoff loss, and was then sent to bolster their American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Indians, who went on to win the Calder Cup. Sanderson played in 64 games in his first full season for the club in 1991–92. HC Dynamo Moscow
HC Dynamo Moscow () is a Russian professional ice hockey club based in Moscow. It is a member of the Tarasov Division in the Kontinental Hockey League. Dynamo has won the Gagarin Cup twice, in 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons, and have won the regular season championship once, in 2013–14, winning the Continental Cup. Artyom Andreyevich "Artemis" Chubarov (russian: Артём Андреевич Чубаров) (born December 13, 1979) is a Russian former professional ice hockey player. He last played with HC Dynamo Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He also played for the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL) and for their minor league affiliates in both the International Hockey League and American Hockey League. Playing career Artyom Chubarov was selected 31st overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 2nd selection for the Vancouver Canucks. Prior to this, he spent four years playing in Russian ice hockey leagues, including the Torpedo organization in Nizhny Novgorod and HC Dynamo Moscow. The Russian Superleague (russian: Чемпионат России Суперлига, ''Russian Championship Superleague''), commonly abbreviated as RSL, was the highest division of the main professional ice hockey league in Russia. It was considered the second best league in the world, after the National Hockey League (NHL) of North America. It was a part of the Russian Pro Hockey League which was composed of three divisions — the Superleague, Major League (''Vysshaya Liga''), and First League (''Pervaya Liga''). Hockey Club Ak Bars (russian: Ак Барс, tt-Cyrl, Ак Барс, en, Snow Leopard), also known as Ak Bars Kazan, is a Russian professional ice hockey team based in Kazan. They are members of the Kharlamov Division of the Kontinental Hockey League. History Founded as Mashstroy Kazan in 1956, the name was later changed to SC Uritskogo Kazan when it entered the Soviet Championship League, Soviet Class B league in 1958. Serhiy Volodymyrovych Varlamov ( uk, Сергі́й Володи́мирович Варла́мов; born July 21, 1978) is a Ukrainian former professional ice hockey player. He played for the Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). Playing career Varlamov came to North America to play junior hockey with the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League (WHL). In 1998, he won the Bob Clarke Trophy as the WHL's top scorer with 119 points. Jeffrey Heerema (; born January 17, 1980) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey winger. He last played for the Nottingham Panthers of the EIHL. He was drafted in the first round, 11th overall, by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Atlanta Thrashers
The Atlanta Thrashers were a professional ice hockey team based in Atlanta. Atlanta was granted a franchise in the National Hockey League (NHL) on June 25, 1997, and became the League's 28th franchise when it began play in the 1999–2000 season. They were members of the Southeast Division of the NHL's Eastern Conference, and played their home games at what is now known as State Farm Arena in downtown Atlanta. Joe DiPenta
Joseph V. DiPenta (born February 25, 1979) is a former Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. DiPenta played 4 seasons in the National Hockey League and 8 seasons in the American Hockey League. He is one of only few hockey players to have won both the Calder Cup and Stanley Cup during their career. Early life DiPenta was born in Barrie, Ontario in 1979. He began playing hockey at age four and later moved to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia at age seven.
