Austria, , bar, Östareich officially the Republic of Austria, is a country in the southern part of Central Europe, lying in the Eastern Alps. It is a federation of nine states, one of which is the capital, Vienna, the most populous city and state. Liane Haid
Juliane "Liane" Haid (16 August 1895 – 28 November 2000) was an Austrian actress and singer. She has often been referred to as Austria's first movie star. Biography Juliane Haid was born in Vienna on 16 August 1895, the first child to Georg Haid (1864–1951) and Juliane Haid (1873–1939). She had two younger sisters, Grit Haid, Grit, who also became an actress, and Johanna (1903–1964). Haid trained both as a dancer and singer and became the epitome of the ''Süßes Wiener Mädel'' ("Sweet Viennese Girl") and a popular pin-up girl, pin-up throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Her first motion picture was a propaganda film made during the First World War, ''Mit Herz und Hand fürs Vaterland'' (1916). She worked for Universum Film AG, UFA and, as a trained singer, easily made the transition to the sound era, appearing in comedy films alongside Austrian and German stars such as Willi Forst, Bruno Kastner, Georg Alexander, Theo Lingen, and Heinz Rühmann. Josef Schaupper
Josef Schaupper (3 August 1963 – 11 November 2000) was an Austrian deaf alpine skier. He represented Austria at the Deaflympics in 1987, 1995 and 1999, winning 7 medals including a gold medal. He died in the Kaprun disaster, Kaprun funicular railway fire on 11 November 2000, along with his fellow deaf skiers. Career Schaupper made his debut at the 1987 Winter Deaflympics and competed on two further occasions. In his maiden appearance, he won 3 medals: gold medal in parallel slalom, silver medal in slalom and bronze medal in downhill. After missing the 1991 Winter Deaflympics, he took part in the 1995 Winter Deaflympics, winning silver medals in the men's giant slalom and super giant events. In the 1999 Winter Deaflympics, he again won silver medals in the men's slalom and super giant events. Paula Anna Maria Wessely (20 January 1907 – 11 May 2000) was an Austrian theatre and film actress. ''Die Wessely'' (literally "The Wessely"), as she was affectionately called by her admirers and fans, was Austria's foremost popular postwar actress. Biography She was born in Vienna, the daughter of butcher Carl Wessely, younger brother of the late Burgtheater actress Josephine Wessely (1860–1887). Like her adored aunt, Paula Wessely prepared for an artistic career. From 1922 she attended the Vienna State Academy of Music and Performing Arts and later the Max Reinhardt Seminar, while she made her debut as an actress in 1924 at the Volkstheater, followed by several minor roles of the boulevard repertoire, also performing at the Raimund Theater. A film star during Hollywood's golden age, Lamarr has been described as one of the greatest movie actresses of all time. Kaprun Disaster
The Kaprun disaster was a fire that occurred in an ascending train in the tunnel of the Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 funicular in Kaprun, Austria, on 11 November 2000. The disaster killed 155 people (150 on the ascending train, two on the descending train and three in the mountain station). There were 12 survivors (10 Germans and two Austrians) from the burning ascending train. Most of the victims were skiers on their way to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. Train The Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 was a funicular railway running from Kaprun to the Kitzsteinhorn, which opened in 1974. In 1993, it was modernized. Michael Häupl (born 14 September 1949) is an Austrian politician. A member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria, he served as mayor and governor of Vienna from 7 November 1994 until 24 May 2018. Early life and education Häupl was born in Altlengbach, Lower Austria. He studied Biology and Zoology at the University of Vienna and was an academic assistant at the Vienna Natural History Museum from 1975 to 1983.
