''2x45'' is the fourth studio album by English band Cabaret Voltaire. It was released in May 1982, through record label Rough Trade. Background The title comes from the album's original format – two 45 RPM 12" discs. This was the last studio album by the band to feature Chris Watson as a member. Sides A and B were recorded at Western Works, Sheffield in October 1981, while Sides C and D were recorded at Pluto Studios, Manchester in February 1982. The track " Yashar" was later remixed as a dance record by John Robie and released as a single. Critical reception Trouser Press found ''2x45'' to be a "temporary letdown" following their previous release, ''Red Mecca'', but went on to say: "Much has been said and written about an industrial, modern-age music; Cabaret Voltaire is the only group doing it... Cabaret Voltaire was an English music group formed in Sheffield in 1973 and initially composed of Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk, and Chris Watson. The group was named after the Cabaret Voltaire, the Zürich nightclub that served as a centre for the early Dada movement. The early work of Cabaret Voltaire consisted primarily of experimentation with DIY electronics and tape machines, as well as Dada-influenced performance art, helping to pioneer industrial music in the mid-1970s. Finding an audience during the post-punk era, they integrated their experimental sensibilities with dance and pop styles. "Yashar" is a single by Cabaret Voltaire. The single is two remixes by John Robie of a track from their 1982 album ''2x45''. A version of the song also appears on the live album ''Hai! (Live in Japan)''. The single was released in May 1983 on Factory Benelux (FBN 25) and Factory Records UK (FAC 82). It reached No. 6 on the UK Indie Chart. The track features a sample "The 70 billion people of Earth — where are they hiding?" from the Outer Limits episode "Demon with a Glass Hand". As well as the 5:00 and 7:20 versions on the single, a 6:36 version was released on the 1983 compilation LP ''Factory Benelux Greatest Hits''. ''Hai! (Live in Japan)'' is a 1982 live album by the U.K. industrial band Cabaret Voltaire. It was recorded at the Tsubaki House in Tokyo, Japan on 23 March 1982, and was released on CD in 1991 by Mute Records Ltd. The original master tapes being lost, the CD was transferred from a vinyl copy (unfortunately, a US pressing was used, with significantly poorer sound and more surface noise than a Japanese original). Avant-funk
Avant-funk (also called mutant disco in the early 1980s) is a music style in which artists combine funk and disco rhythms with an avant-garde or art rock mentality. Its most prominent era occurred in the late 1970s and 1980s among post-punk and no wave acts who embraced black dance music. Characteristics Artists described as "avant-funk" or "mutant disco" have blended elements from styles such as funk, punk, disco, freeform jazz and dub. ''Stylus Magazine'' was an American online music and film magazine, launched in 2002 and co-founded by Todd L. Burns. It featured long-form music journalism, four daily music reviews, movie reviews, podcasts, an MP3 blog, and a text blog. Neville Brody, (born 23 April 1957) is an English graphic designer, typographer and art director. He is known for his work on ''The Face'' magazine (1981–1986), ''Arena'' magazine (1987–1990), and designing record covers for artists such as Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, The Bongos, 23 Skidoo and Depeche Mode. He created the company Research Studios in 1994 and is a founding member of Fontworks. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). He was the Dean of the School of Communication at the Royal College of Art, London until September 2018. He is now Professor of Communication.
