28th Infantry Division (Turkey)
The 28th Mechanized Infantry Division (28. Mekanize Piyade Tümeni) is an infantry formation of the Turkish Land Forces. In 1941 the 28th Infantry Division was part of IV Corps Çatalca Area, First Army. It was deployed from Ankara under 6th Corps to Cyprus for the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. Since the 1970s it has formed part of 11th Corps/Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces. Major General Hilmi Özkök General Hilmi Özkök (born 1940 in Turgutlu, Manisa Province) was the 24th Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces. Turkish Land Forces
The Turkish Land Forces ( tr, Türk Kara Kuvvetleri), or Turkish Army (Turkish: ), is the main branch of the Turkish Armed Forces responsible for land-based military operations. The army was formed on November 8, 1920, after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. 4th Corps (Turkey)
The 4th Corps is a field corps of the Turkish Land Forces. Its headquarters is in Ankara. It was established in the Ankara area in 1966. In 1974, it appears to have been part of the Second Army. 6th Corps (Turkey)
The 6th Corps (Turkish: 6. Kolordu) is a field corps of the Turkish Army. It is headquartered at Adana in Adana Province, and is part of Second Army. The 1974 Turkish military operations in Cyprus consisted of two distinct offensives, the first being "Atilla 1", which commenced in the early hours of July 20, 1974, with an amphibious landing force, directed by the 6th Corps, forming a beachhead at Kyrenia's Five Mile Beach. The Cyprus Turkish Peace Force Command ( tr, Kıbrıs Türk Barış Kuvvetleri Komutanlığı) is the Turkish garrison in Cyprus. Hilmi Özkök
General Hilmi Özkök (born 1940 in Turgutlu, Manisa Province) was the 24th Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces. He took up that post on August 28, 2002, and served until August 30, 2006, when he retired and was succeeded by General Yaşar Büyükanıt. Özkök has expressed support for Turkey's alignment with the European Union, sought a reduced role for the National Security Council, and opposed his peers' plans to stage a coup. Education and personal life Hilmi Özkök was born in Turgutlu, Manisa Province, and has been a career soldier. He was educated at the Isiklar (Işıklar) Military High School in Bursa and went from there in 1957 to complete a two-year course at the Turkish Military Academy.
