23rd Hong Kong Film Awards
Ceremony for the 23rd Hong Kong Film Awards was held on 4 April 2004 in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Hosts for the ceremony consisted of Dayo Wong and a line-up of nine female celebrities, namely Bowie Tsang, Athena Chu, Candice Yu, Cherrie Ying, Terri Kwan, Ada Choi, Josie Ho, Kristy Yang and Jo Koo. Twenty-three winners in nineteen categories were unveiled. ''Running on Karma'' clinched the award for Best Film, while its leading man Andy Lau received his second Best Actor title in the Hong Kong Film Awards. Awards Winners are listed first, highlighted in boldface, and indicated with a double dagger (). The ''Timeless Artistic Achievement Award'' was a special award presented to Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung in recognition of their contributions to Hong Kong cinema. Hong Kong Cultural Centre
The Hong Kong Cultural Centre () is a multipurpose performance facility in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. Located at Salisbury Road, it was built by the former Urban Council and, since 2000, has been administered by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Government. A wide variety of cultural performances are held here. ''PTU'', also known as ''PTU: Police Tactical Unit'', is a 2003 Hong Kong crime thriller film produced and directed by Johnnie To, starring Simon Yam, Maggie Shiu, Lam Suet and Ruby Wong. Plot The film follows a series of encounters of a group of patrolling Police Tactical Unit troopers during one night, which starts off when the patrol-team tries to help a sergeant of the District Anti-Triad Squad of the Hong Kong Police Force, Lo Sa, to retrieve his lost service-issue revolver after he was assaulted by a group of triad members. Alan Mak Siu-fai (; born 1 January 1965), is a Hong Kong writer, director, actor and producer. Early life In 1965, Mak was born in Hong Kong. Education In 1986, Mak studied at the School of Drama in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Upon graduation in 1990, he started his movie career. Career Mak made his directorial debut in 1997, with his first film being '' Nude Fear'', which was written and produced by Joe Ma. Andrew Lau Wai-keung ( zh, t=劉偉強, born 4 April 1960) is a Hong Kong film director, producer, and cinematographer. Wai Ka-Fai (born 21 September 1962) is a Hong Kong screenwriter, producer, film director, and former TV screenwriter and producer. Wai is best known for his frequent collaborations with Johnnie To, another former TV turned film director and producer. Derek Yee Tung-sing () is a film producer, director and a former Shaw Brothers actor from Hong Kong. Early life Yee was born Yee Tung-sing in Hong Kong on 28 December 1957, the son of Yee Kwong (爾光), a film producer from Tientsin (Tianjin), and Hung Wei (紅薇), an actress of half Manchu, half Mongol ethnicity. ''Heroic Duo'' () is a 2003 Hong Kong action film produced and directed by Benny Chan and starring Leon Lai, Ekin Cheng and Francis Ng. Plot Ken Li is a senior member of the Hong Kong Police Force. He has an egocentric and overpowering personality. He is intolerant of mistakes, his underlings and girlfriend, Brenda, suffering due to his macho personality. The main action begins when Inspector Li is brought in to investigate a cop who has committed a crime. On interrogation the cop reveals that he remembers nothing since he met a man the night before. The strange circumstances lead Li to Jack Lai, who is a master hypnotist and also in jail for manslaughter after taking the rap for a murder his wife committed under duress. The Hong Kong Film Award for Best Director is an award presented annually at the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA). It is given to honour the best director of a Hong Kong film. The 1st Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony was held in 1982, with no formal nomination procedure established; the award was given to Allen Fong for his direction of ''Father and Son.'' After the first award ceremony, a nomination system was put in place whereby no more than five nominations are made for each category and each entry is selected through two rounds of voting. Firstly, prospective nominees are marked with a weight of 50% each from HKFA voters and a hundred professional adjudicators, contributing towards a final score with which the top five nominees advance to the second round of voting.
