Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island (PEI; ) is one of the thirteen Provinces and territories of Canada, provinces and territories of Canada. It is the smallest province in terms of land area and population, but the most densely populated. The island has several nicknames: "Garden of the Gulf", "Birthplace of Confederation" and "Cradle of Confederation". Its capital and largest city is Charlottetown. Donald Montgomery
Donald Montgomery (January 19, 1808 – July 31, 1893) was a farmer and politician from Prince Edward Island. He represented Princetown and then 1st Queens in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1838 to 1874 as a Conservative member and served as a Conservative member of the Senate of Canada from 1873 until his death. Montgomery Manor in Park Corner, PEI, is where Donald Montgomery and his wife, Ann Murray raised their family. He was born in Fox Point, Princetown, Lot 18, Prince Edward Island, the son of Daniel Montgomery & Ann/Nancy Penman. Daniel or Donald Montgomery was a Scottish immigrant and long-time member of the provincial assembly. Montgomery was educated in Princetown. Edward Whelan (Canadian Politician)
Edward Whelan (1824 – December 10, 1867) was one of Prince Edward Island's delegates to the Quebec Conference, 1864, Québec Conference and one of the Fathers of the Canadian Confederation. Whelan was also a journalist, orator and advocate for responsible government. Early years Edward Whelan was born in 1824 in Ballina, County Mayo, in Ireland. At 7 years old, his family and him all moved to Halifax (former city), Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1831. Growing up in Halifax, he was greatly influenced by Joseph Howe, where he worked as a printing apprentice, as well as Father Richard Baptist O’Brien, a dynamic Irish priest who was a gifted orator as well as Whelan's teacher at St. Mary's School in Halifax. Joseph Hensley
Joseph Hensley (12 June 1824 – 11 May 1894) was a Prince Edward Island politician. His father, Charles Hensley, had been a member of the legislative council and colonial treasurer. Hensley served briefly as Premier of Prince Edward Island in 1869 and then as an associate justice of the province's Supreme Court for a quarter of a century. Background Josephy Hensley was born and educated in England. His family settled on PEI in 1841 where Hensley became a lawyer. He was appointed to the legislative council by George Coles and served as Attorney-General under Coles' various Liberal governments of the 1850s. William Henry Pope (Canadian Politician)
William Henry Pope (May 29, 1825 – October 7, 1879) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, journalist, judge and one of the Fathers of Confederation. He was born in Bedeque, P.E.I.(Prince Edward Island), the son of Joseph Pope and Lucy Colledge. He was educated in England, but returned to Charlottetown where he studied law at the office of Edward Palmer. He became a lawyer in 1847. The editor of Prince Edward Island's main Tory newspaper, ''The Islander'', from 1859 to 1872, he entered politics in 1863. He was named Colonial Secretary in 1859 even though he was not a part of the legislature because of a government experiment of having civil servants head the government departments. Francis Kelly (Canadian Politician)
Francis Kelly (May 1806 – 19 April 1879) was a Canadian surveyor, business agent, farmer, and politician, noted for his long service as a member of the government of Prince Edward Island (PEI), and as an advocate for Catholic issues on PEI during the period of Canadian Confederation. His Life Prior to Politics Born in Mulloloughan, County Monaghan, Ireland, Kelly was schooled in Dublin, and worked as a teacher and law clerk before emigrating to PEI with his wife, Catherine Lennon, in May, 1835, ten years before the Great Famine. Kelly settled at Fort Augustus, Price Edward Island, not far from the province's capital of Charlottetown. George Coles (politician)
George Coles (September 20, 1810 – August 21, 1875) was a Canadian politician, being the first premier of Prince Edward Island, and a Father of Canadian Confederation. Coles was born in Queens Royalty, Prince Edward Island, the son of James Coles, a farmer, and Sarah Tally. Although he had little formal education he became a farmer and a businessman at an early age. He travelled to England at age 19. There he learned about the brewing industry. While in England he married Mercy Haine on August 14, 1833, and they returned to Prince Edward Island before the end of that year. He soon became a prosperous brewer and merchant. He first entered politics in 1841 representing the New London-DeSable district in the Assembly. Coles was always a colourful political figure.
