2024 Tokyo Marathon
The 2024 Tokyo Marathon was the 17th edition of the annual marathon race in Tokyo, held on Sunday, 3 March 2024. A Platinum Label marathon, it was the first of six annual World Marathon Majors events to be held in 2024. With over 37,000 competitors, new course records were set in both the men's and women's races. Benson Kipruto (born 17 March 1991) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. He won the 125th Boston Marathon in 2021 (2:09:51) and the 2022 Chicago Marathon in a personal best of 2:04:24. Tomoki Suzuki (athlete)
Tomoki Suzuki ( ja, 鈴木 朋樹, born 14 June 1994) is a Japanese wheelchair racer, who won the 2020 Tokyo Marathon, came second at the 2015, 2018, 2021 and 2023 Tokyo Marathons, and came third at the 2017 Tokyo and 2019 and 2023 London Marathons. Suzuki competed in multiple events at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, and won a bronze medal in the mixed 4 × 100 metres relay. Personal life Suzuki was born on 14 June 1994 in Tateyama, Chiba, Japan. At the age of eight months, Suzuki was involved in a car accident that left him with paraplegia. He now lives in Tokyo. Career Suzuki competed at the 2009 Asian Youth Para Games, whilst at middle school. Whilst in secondary school, he was coached by Paralympian Nobukazu Hanaoka. Manuela Schär (born 5 December 1984) is a Paralympian athlete from Switzerland competing mainly in category T54 sprint events. She has used a wheelchair since the age of 8, when a playground accident paralysed her from the waist down. Career Schär competed in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. There she won a silver medal in the women's 200 metres – T54 event, bronze in the women's 100 metres – T54 event and finished sixth in the women's 400 metres – T54 event. World Athletics Label Road Races
World Athletics Label Road Races are races that the World Athletics (until 2019: ''IAAF'') designates as one of the "leading road races around the world." The classification was first introduced for the 2008 running season, upon the suggestion of the IAAF Road Running Commission. The races are split into three categories: marathons, half marathons and other. Within the "other" category are traditional road race distances, over which World Athletics world records can be set, along with some "Classical races", which span unusual distances.
