2023 Wake Forest Demon Deacons Baseball Team
The 2023 Wake Forest Demon Deacons baseball team represented the Wake Forest University during the 2023 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Demon Deacons played their home games at David F. Couch Ballpark as a members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They are led by head coach Tom Walter, in his 13th season at Wake. Previous season The 2022 team finished the season with a 41–19–1 record and a 15–14–1 record in ACC play. They went 1–1 in the ACC tournament and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, their first since 2017. The Demon Deacons were seeded second in the 2022 NCAA Division I baseball tournament#Stanford Super Regional, College Park Regional, where they went 1–2, beating LIU Sharks baseball, LIU, but losing to Maryland Terrapins baseball, Maryland and UConn Huskies baseball, UConn. Tom Walter
Tom Walter is an American college baseball coach. He has been the head coach of Wake Forest since the start of the 2010 season. Before coming to Wake Forest, Walter held head coaching positions at George Washington from 1997–2004 and New Orleans from 2005–2009. He was an assistant at George Washington from 1992–1994. Walter's career head coaching record, as of the end of the 2014 season, is 560–473. Outside NCAA baseball, Walter served as the assistant general manager of the minor league Greensboro Bats from 1995–1996. In collegiate summer baseball, Walter was the head coach of the Valley Baseball League's New Market Rebels in 1994 and the Cape Cod League's Cotuit Kettleers from 1997–1998. Catcher
Catcher is a Baseball positions, position in baseball and softball. When a Batter (baseball), batter takes their at bat, turn to hit, the catcher crouches behind home plate, in front of the (home plate, home) Umpire (baseball), umpire, and receives the ball from the pitcher. In addition to this primary duty, the catcher is also called upon to master many other skills in order to field the position well. The role of the catcher is similar to that of the wicket-keeper in cricket. Positioned behind home plate and facing toward the outfield, the catcher can see the whole field, and is therefore in the best position to direct and lead the other players in a defensive play. The catcher typically calls for pitches using hand signals. The calls are based on the pitcher's mechanics and strengths, as well as the Batting (baseball), batter's tendencies and weaknesses.
