The 2023 Speedway of Nations 2 (SON2) was the 19th Team Under-21 World Championship season, organised by the FIM and sponsored by DeWalt. The event took place on 11 August 2023 at the Riga Speedway Stadium in Riga, Latvia. Defending champions Poland won their 16th Team Under-21 World Championship and tenth in succession. Riga Speedway Stadium
The Riga Speedway Stadium or the Biķernieki Speedway Stadium is a multi-use stadium in the Eastern part of Riga, Latvia. The stadium is the venue for the 2023 World Championship round known as the Speedway Grand Prix of Latvia and the Team Speedway Under-21 World Championship. The speedway track which is adjacent to the Biķernieki Complex Sports Base was first constructed in 1976 and held several editions of the Soviet Union Speedway Championship before falling into disrepair. However, in 2014 the track was renovated and has even hosted a drift race car meeting that normally tales place on the larger adjacent circuit. Team Speedway Junior World Championship
The Team Speedway Under-21 World Championship is a speedway competition to determine the World Championship for national Under-21 teams. The sport's equivalent of the Under-21 World Cup in football, as of 2022 the title is awarded to the winners of SON2, the Under-21 division of the Speedway of Nations. The first edition of the competition was in 2005 prior to its incorporation with the Speedway of Nations. Poland has dominated the competition winning the title record 15 times. 2023 SGP2
The 2023 SGP2 series was the 47th edition of the FIM Individual Under-21 World Championship. It was staged as the SGP2 class of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series after rights holders Discovery Sports Events took over promotional rights of the competition in 2022. The three qualifying rounds were staged at Krsko, Pardubice and Vojens on 20 May. Four qualifiers from each qualifying heat progressed to the main event. Three wildcards were chosen for the main event, in addition to the 12 qualifiers; they were Mathias Pollestad, Anže Grmek and Petr Chlupáč. Poland's Mateusz Cierniak won the title for the second season running, becoming only the fourth rider to win multiple Under-21 World Championship titles after Emil Sayfutdinov, Darcy Ward and Maksym Drabik. Drew Kemp (born 11 August 2002) is a British motorcycle speedway rider. Career In 2019, riding for Kent Kings Kemp won the Division 3 Pairs with Anders Rowe, the National Trophy and finished runner-up in the NDL Riders' Championship behind his teammate Rowe. He reached the final of the 2019 U19 European Championship. Kemp joined Eastbourne Eagles on 19 November 2019, for their 2020 SGB Championship season. It was confirmed, on 18 February 2020, that he would ride for his hometown club Ipswich Witches in the SGB Premiership. He was brought into the side after the suicide of his former Mildenhall Fen Tigers teammate Danny Ayres. However the season was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Dan Gilkes
Daniel Gilkes (born 21 May 2002) is a motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career In 2019, he signed for the Kent Kings for the 2019 National Development League speedway season, helping them to National Trophy success. He was crowned the supporters rider of the year. Unable to ride during 2020 because of the COVID-19 cancelled season, he continued to ride for Kent in 2021 but appeared in both the NDL and the higher league of the SGB Championship 2021. In 2022, he signed for Plymouth Gladiators and his form was so impressive that he was added to the Peterborough Panthers squad in the SGB Premiership 2022 (the highest league in Britain). He started the 2022 campaign in very good form but his season ended early when he crashed and suffered serious injuries that included five broken ribs, a broken and displaced humorous bone and a collapsed lung. Anders James Rowe (born 9 May 2002) is a motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Rowe started riding for the Kent Kings during the 2018 National League speedway season and helped them win the National Trophy and Pairs Championship. He then joined Somerset Rebels for the SGB Championship 2019. The same year he won the 2019 National League Riders' Championship. In 2021, he moved up to the SGB Premiership and started riding for Ipswich Witches, as well as riding in the lower division for Redcar Bears. In 2022, he stayed with the Ipswich Witches in the SGB Premiership 2022 and joined Leicester Lions in the SGB Championship 2022. Later that season he switched from Leicester to Scunthorpe Scorpions. Erik Bachhuber (born 6 October 2003) is a German motorcycle speedway rider. Career Bachhuber won the German 125cc title twice in 2016 and 2017 before moving up to 250cc, which he also won in 2019. He came to prominence when winning the German U21 title and winning the German league title with MSC Olching.
