2023 Plymouth City Council Election
The 2023 Plymouth City Council election is due to be held on 4 May 2023 to elect members of Plymouth City Council in England. It will coincide with local elections across the United Kingdom. In the previous election, both Labour and the Conservative Party gained seats as councillors who had left their party groups stood down or unsuccessfully sought re-election. The Green Party won its first ever seat on Plymouth Council in that election. Between the elections, after being deselected by the Conservative Party, the former Conservative council leader Nick Kelly started a new "Independent Alliance" group with the ex-Conservative councillor Terri Beer and the ex-Labour councillor Chaz Singh. The Independent Alliance group grew with more defections from the Conservative group. After two Conservative councillors who had moved to Gloucestershire resigned, by-elections took place in Moor View and Plympton Chaddlewood, which were won by Labour and the Green Party respectively. Plymouth City Council
Plymouth City Council is the unitary authority for Plymouth, Devon. It has traditionally been controlled by Labour or the Conservatives. The council is currently in a state of no overall control, with the Conservatives governing as a minority administration. The council is run using the leader and cabinet model, where the leader of the council—normally the leader of the majority party—is selected by fellow councillors, who also select the executive, commonly referred to as the cabinet. Multilevel regression with poststratification (MRP) (sometimes called "Mister P") is a statistical technique used for correcting model estimates for known differences between a sample population (the population of the data you have), and a target population (a population you would like to estimate for). For example, Wang et al. used survey data from Xbox gamers to predict U.S. presidential election results. The Xbox gamers were 65% 18- to 29-year-olds and 93% male, while the electorate as a whole was 19% 18- to 29-year-olds and 47% male. The poststratification refers to the process of adjusting the estimates, essentially a weighted average of estimates from all possible combinations of attributes (in this example age and sex, though there were more). Gary Streeter
Sir Gary Nicholas Streeter (born 2 October 1955) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. Since 1997 he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for South West Devon, previously holding the nearby seat of Plymouth Sutton between 1992 and 1997. Since the convening of the Fifty-fifth Parliament, Streeter has been the longest currently serving MP representing a constituency in the county of Devon. Johnny Mercer (politician)
John Luther Mercer (born 17 August 1981) is a British politician and former British Army officer who has served as Minister of State for Veterans’ Affairs since October 2022, having previously served from July 2022 to September 2022. He was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence People and Veterans from July 2019 to April 2021. Mercer has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Plymouth Moor View since 2015. 2022 Plymouth City Council Election
The 2022 Plymouth City Council election took place on 5 May 2022 to elect members of Plymouth City Council in England. It coincided with local elections across the United Kingdom. The Conservative Party made gains in the previous election in 2021, resulting in the council entering no overall control with no party holding a majority of seats. Immediately following the results of the 2022 election, the council remained in no overall control. Labour and the Conservatives gained seats from independent councillors who had left their parties and exchanged seats with each other. Tudor Evans is a British Labour Co-operative politician who has been the leader of Plymouth City Council four times. Since 2021 he has been the leader of the opposition. He has been a councillor for Ham ward since 1988 and has led the Labour group on Plymouth City Council since 1998. He served as leader of the council from 1998 to 2000, from 2003 to 2007, from 2012 to 2016, and 2018 to 2021. Early life Evans was born in Ebbw Vale in Wales. 2022 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections in the United Kingdom took place on 5 May 2022. These included elections for all London borough councils, for all local authorities in Wales and Scotland. Most seats in England were last up for election in 2018 and in Scotland and Wales in 2017. The elections coincided with the 2022 Northern Ireland Assembly election.
