2023 NHL Winter Classic
The 2023 NHL Winter Classic was an outdoor ice hockey game played in the National Hockey League (NHL) on January 2, 2023, at Fenway Park in Boston. The 14th edition of the Winter Classic, it matched the Boston Bruins against the Pittsburgh Penguins; the Bruins won, 2–1. Background On February 4, 2022, the NHL announced that the 2023 NHL Winter Classic would take place at Fenway Park, hosted by the Boston Bruins. Fenway Park became the first venue to host two Winter Classics, having previously hosted the 2010 NHL Winter Classic. ESPN reported in February 2022 that the Pittsburgh Penguins would likely be the opponent after Fenway Sports Group, owner of Fenway Park, took over majority control of the Penguins in December 2021. 2022–23 Pittsburgh Penguins Season
The 2022–23 Pittsburgh Penguins season was the 56th season for the National Hockey League team that was established on June 5, 1967. During the season Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang each played in their 1,000th NHL game, joining Sidney Crosby as the only players in franchise history to accomplish this feat while playing all 1,000 games for the Penguins. They were eliminated from playoff contention on April 12, 2023 after the New York Islanders defeated the Montreal Canadiens, missing the postseason for the first time since 2006, and ending the longest active playoff appearance streak among the four major North American sports leagues at 16 years. Interference (ice Hockey)
A penalty in ice hockey is a punishment for an infringement of the rules. Most penalties are enforced by sending the offending player to a penalty box for a set number of minutes. During the penalty the player may not participate in play. Penalties are called and enforced by the referee, or in some cases, the linesman. The offending team may not replace the player on the ice (although there are some exceptions, such as fighting), leaving them short-handed as opposed to full strength. When the opposing team is said to be on a ''power play'', they will have one more player on the ice than the short-handed team. The short-handed team is said to be "on the penalty kill" until the penalty expires and the penalized player returns to play. While standards vary somewhat between leagues, most leagues recognize several common varieties of penalties, as well as common infractions. Pierre-Olivier Joseph (born July 1, 1999) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). Boarding in ice hockey and ringette is a penalty called when an offending player pushes, trips or checks an opposing player violently into the boards (walls) of the hockey rink. This article deals chiefly with ice hockey. In ice hockey, the boarding call is quite often a major penalty due to the likelihood of injury sustained by the player who was boarded, and officials have the discretion to call a game misconduct or a match penalty (if they feel the offense was a deliberate attempt to injure) on the offending player. However, in the North American professional ice hockey league, the NHL, if a major penalty is assessed and the boarded player sustains a head or facial injury, the offending player receives an automatic game misconduct. Teodors Bļugers (anglicized as Theodor "Teddy" Blueger; born 15 August 1994) is a Latvian professional ice hockey centre for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL).
