Events *7 January – US-born Finnish violinist Elina Vähälä gives the first North American performance of the original 1904 version of Sibelius's Violin Concerto, with the Minnesota Orchestra under Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä. *1 February ** The Royal Danish Orchestra announces that Marie Jacquot will be its next music director, effective with the 2024-2025 season, with an initial contract of 5 years. Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu
(; abbreviated UMK; en, italics=yes, Contest for New Music) is an annual music contest organised by the Finnish public broadcaster Yle. UMK began in 2012 as the new format for the Eurovision Song Contest, replacing the original Finnish Eurovision selection ''Suomen euroviisukarsinta'' which had been held since 1961. Winners Seasons Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2012 The final took place on 25 February 2012 at the Helsinki Ice Hall in Helsinki where the six finalist songs were performed and the viewers selected a winner. The show featured interval performances by The Rasmus, Anna Abreu, and 2011 Finnish entrant Paradise Oskar. The first of two rounds of televoting selected "När jag blundar" performed by Pernilla Karlsson, "Laululeija" performed by Stig and "Lasikaupunki" performed by Ville Eetvartti as the three super finalists. Maxime Pascal
Maxime Pascal (born 9 September 1985, Carcassonne, Nantes, France) is a French conductor. Biography Born to musician parents, a jazz trombonist father and a pianist mother, Pascal began piano studies with his mother, and subsequently studied violin, in his youth in Carcassonne. In 2005, he began music studies at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique in Paris, in composition, musical analysis and orchestration classes. He then developed an interest in conducting, and enrolled in the conducting class of François-Xavier Roth. In 2008, the ensemble Le Balcon, named after the play by Jean Genet and co-founded by Juan-Pablo Carreño, Mathieu Costecalde, Alphonse Cemin, Florent Derex Pascal, Pedro Garcia-Velasquez and Pascal, gave its first public performance. NorrlandsOperan
The NorrlandsOperan (literal translation, ''The Norrland's Opera''; NOP), is a Swedish opera company in Umeå, located in Norrland, Sweden. The ownership of NOP is divided between the Umeå Municipality (40%) and the Västerbotten County Council (60%). NOP was established in 1974 as a regional opera ensemble. The NOP's first artistic director was Arnold Östman, from 1974 to 1979. NOP now has its own symphony orchestra and facilities for opera, dance, music and art as well as workshops and studios. History Norrlandsoperan was founded in 1974 as a direct result of Swedish cultural reform the same year. The musical theater group ''Sångens makt'' constituted the core of the newly formed opera ensemble. Norwegian Radio Orchestra
The Norwegian Radio Orchestra (Norwegian, ''Kringkastingsorkestret'', abbreviated as KORK) is a radio orchestra affiliated with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (''Norsk rikskringkasting AS'', or NRK). Its principal base is the ''Store Studio'' at the NRK's headquarters in Oslo. The orchestra's current chief administrator is Rolf Lennart Stensø. As of 2018, KORK consists of fifty-nine musicians. History KORK was founded in 1946 with twenty-four musicians in the orchestra, from ensembles previously led by Øivind Bergh and Gunnar Knudsen. Øivind Bergh served as its first principal conductor from 1946 to 1976. The orchestra initially secured its reputation in performances of entertainment music and light classics. Loreen (singer)
Lorine Zineb Nora Talhaoui, known professionally as Loreen (; ar, لورين زينب نورا طلحاوي; born 16 October 1983) is a Swedish multi-genre singer, songwriter and record producer. Representing Sweden, she won the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, with her entry "Euphoria". The song reached number one in many European countries, including Germany and Sweden. Interested in becoming a musician, Loreen took part in the ''Idol 2004'' television competition, finishing fourth. The following year she released her first single, "The Snake", with the band Rob'n'Raz and became a television presenter on TV400. While working as a segment producer and director for several Swedish reality TV shows, she entered Melodifestivalen 2011 with the song "My Heart Is Refusing Me", which became a Top 10 hit in Sweden. Sigur Rós
Sigur Rós () is an Icelandic post-rock band from Reykjavík, active since 1994. The band comprises singer and guitarist Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson, bassist Georg Hólm, and keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson. Known for their ethereal sound, frontman Jónsi's falsetto vocals, and their use of bowed guitar, Sigur Rós incorporate classical and minimal aesthetic elements. Jónsi's vocals are sung in Icelandic and non-linguistic vocalisations the band have termed ''Vonlenska''. They have released seven studio albums and five EPs since their formation.
