2023 Gaza Economic Protests
In July and August 2023, thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip took to the streets to protest chronic power outages, poor economic conditions in the territory, and Hamas's taxation of stipends to the poor paid by Qatar. The rallies, organized by a grassroots online movement called "Alvirus Alsakher" (The mocking virus), were a rare public display of discontent against the ruling Hamas government. Hamas bars most demonstrations and public displays of discontent. Mohammed Yousef El-Najar Hospital
The Mohammed Yousef El-Najar Hospital ( ar, مستشفى الشهيد أبو يوسف النجار) is a hospital in Rafah, Gaza Strip, Palestine. History The hospital was established in 2000 by transforming the previous center for primary care at the building. On 1 August 2014, the building was attacked by Israel Defense Forces. During the 2023 Gaza economic protests, Hamas authorities launched an arrest campaign after the outbreak of protests, including raiding the hospital to arrest injured protestors seeking treatment at the hospital. Architecture The hospital spans over an area of 4,000 m2. It has a total of 65 beds and it consists of two operating rooms. The emergency department has a total of 9 beds. ' ( ar, الشعب يريد إسقاط النظام, lit=the people want to bring down the regime, ) is a political slogan associated with the Arab Spring. The slogan first emerged during the Tunisian Revolution. The chant echoed at Avenue Habib Bourguiba in Tunis for weeks. The slogan also became used frequently during the 2011 Egyptian revolution. It was the most frequent slogan, both in graffiti and in chants in rallies, during the revolution in Egypt. The chant was raised at the protests in Bahrain. Hamas Government In Gaza
The governance of the Gaza Strip since the Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip in June 2007 has been carried out by Hamas, which is often referred to as the Hamas government in Gaza. The Hamas administration was led by Ismail Haniyeh from 2007 to 2014 and again from 2016.
