2022 Super Rugby Aupiki Season
The 2022 Super Rugby Aupiki season is the inaugural season of Super Rugby Aupiki. The competition commenced on 10 March between Chiefs Manawa and Matatū. On 20 March, Chiefs Manawa were crowned as the inaugural champions of Super Rugby Aupiki after defeating the Blues Women 35–0 in the final round of the competition. Teams Format All four teams will get three regular season matches; one home, one away, and one Super Round fixture. The top two teams will contest the final. The competition was later reformatted to a round robin fixture due to the impact of COVID-19. All the squads were strongly affected with player isolations and COVID-19 cases. The inaugural champion would be crowned based on their competition points. Chiefs (rugby Union)
The Chiefs (formerly known as the Waikato Chiefs and officially called the Gallagher Chiefs for sponsorship reasons) are a New Zealand professional rugby union team based in Hamilton, Waikato. The team competes in the Super Rugby competition, previously known as the Super 12 and Super 14, and are one of the competition's five New Zealand teams. Their primary home ground is Waikato Stadium. Until 2004, the Chiefs were the only New Zealand side never to have qualified for the Super 12 semi-finals. In that year the Chiefs earned their first semi-final berth, and in the end achieved fourth place (defeated 37–20 in the semi-final by the ACT Brumbies). Grace Steinmetz
Grace Steinmetz (born 16 January 1998) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She made her test debut for the Black Ferns in 2022. She plays for Chiefs Manawa in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition, she previously played for Matatū. She also represents Canterbury provincially. Personal life Steinmetz was born in Paraparaumu. She participated in hockey, athletics and touch rugby before she moved into Sevens rugby. She is the niece of 2002 All Blacks second five Paul Steinmetz. Steinmetz is a Lawyer and studied Law and Commerce at the University of Canterbury. Rugby career 2018–20 Steinmetz played sevens for Wellington and was in Japan on a sevens contract in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to return to New Zealand. Martha Mataele
Martha Mataele (born 9 July 1999) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for Matatū in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition and represents Canterbury at Provincial level. Rugby career Mataele is of Tongan descent, she was born in Auckland and was raised in Christchurch. She first attended Villa Maria College before switching to Christchurch Girls’ High School in 2017. Mataele made her debut for Canterbury in 2021 and then debuted for Matatū a year later in Super Rugby Aupiki's inaugural season. 2023 Mataele and her sister, Atlanta Lolohea, were part of Matatū's squad that won the 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki season. Hazel Tubic (born 31 December 1990) is a New Zealand-based rugby union player. She represents New Zealand internationally and was a member of their 2017 and 2021 Rugby World Cup champion sides. She plays for Chiefs Manawa in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Rugby career 2011–2017 Tubic made her test debut for the Black Ferns in 2011 against England. Portia Woodman-Wickliffe (née Woodman; born 12 July 1991) is a New Zealand rugby union player. Renee Woodman-Wickliffe (née Wickliffe; born 30 May 1987) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She represents and Auckland. Joanah Ngan-Woo
Joanah Ngan-Woo (born 15 December 1995) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays Lock for the Black Ferns and was a member of their 2021 Rugby World Cup champion squad.
