The 2022 Niue National Awards were awards made under the Niue National Awards system to recognise achievement and service by Niueans. They were announced on 19 October 2022. The recipients of honours are displayed here as they were styled before their new honour. Niue National Awards
The Niue National Awards is a system of orders, decorations and medals to recognise the achievements of, or service by, Niueans. It was established in 2020. Previously Niue had fallen under the New Zealand royal honours system. The awards are decided by the National Awards Committee and announced each year on Constitution Day, 19 October. There are three levels of awards: * The Niue Distinguished Service Cross (NDSC) for distinguished service, for those who have "contributed many years of outstanding service to the people and nation of Niue"; * The Niue Public Service Medal (NPSM) for those who have contributed significantly as members of the Niue Public Service; and * The Niue Community Service Star (NCSS) for community service. The first awards were made in October 2020. Successive awards have been made in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Niue
Niue (, ; niu, Niuē) is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Zealand. Niue's land area is about and its population, predominantly Polynesian, was about 1,600 in 2016. Niue is located in a triangle between Tonga, Samoa, and the Cook Islands. It is 604 kilometres northeast of Tonga. The island is commonly referred to as "The Rock", which comes from the traditional name "Rock of Polynesia". Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands. The terrain of the island has two noticeable levels. The higher level is made up of a limestone cliff running along the coast, with a plateau in the centre of the island reaching approximately 60 metres (200 feet) above sea level. The lower level is a coastal terrace approximately 0.5 km (0.3 miles) wide and about 25–27 metres (80–90 feet) high, which slopes down and meets the sea in small cliffs. Pokotoa Sipeli
Pokotoa Ikiua Lalotoa Sipeli is a former Niuean politician and Cabinet Minister who served in the cabinet of Toke Talagi from 2008 to 2020. Career Sipeli was first elected to the Niue Assembly in the seat of Liku at the 1993 Niuean general election. Following the 2008 election, he was appointed to premier Toke Talagi's cabinet, as minister of post and telecommunications, minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and minister of administrative services. Atapana Siakimotu
Atapana Siakimotu ( – 2022) was a Niuean politician, diplomat, and public servant. He served as the speaker of the Niuean Assembly between 2002 and 2011. Biography Siakimotu was educated at Lincoln College in New Zealand, graduating with a diploma in horticulture. He previously worked as principal of Niue High School, director of education, and as consul-general to New Zealand. He was appointed speaker of the assembly after the 2002 election, and was re-appointed in 2005 and 2008. In April 2011, he announced that he would retire at the 2011 election, after serving nine years as speaker. He later served as chair of the Niue Public Service Commission. Siakimotu contested the seat of Avatele in the 2020 Niuean general election General elections were held in Niue on 30 May 2020 for the 20 members of the Niue Assembly.
