2022 Melbourne Cup
The 2022 Melbourne Cup (known commercially as the 2022 Lexus Melbourne Cup) was the 162nd running of the Melbourne Cup, a prestigious Australian Thoroughbred horse race. The race, run over , was held on 1 November 2022 at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse. The final field for the race was declared on 29 October 2022. The total prize money for the race was A$8 million, the same as the previous year. The race was won by Gold Trip, ridden by Mark Zahra and trained by Ciaron Maher & David Eustace. At least three Melbourne Cup runners were ruled out of the races during failed CT scan, included Caulfield Cup winner Durston. Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has a long tradition, with the first race held in 1861. Blake Shinn (born 26 September 1987) is an Australian jockey, who rode the 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed for trainer Bart Cummings. Craig Newitt (born 1984 or 1985) is an Australian jockey who rides mostly in Victoria. Newitt was born in Tasmania, the son of two jockeys. He began his career in 2000, and moved to Victoria to finish his apprenticeship with Lee Freedman. His first Group One winner was Perfect Promise in the 2006 C F Orr Stakes. Wayne Lordan
Wayne Lordan is a multiple Group race winning Irish jockey. His first winner was Ethbaat for trainer Gerry Cully at Killarney on 15 July 1998. In his early career he was associated with the stables of David Wachman and Tommy Stack. He also rode occasionally for Eddie Lynam. It was for Lynam he won his first Group 1 on the unfancied Sole Power in the 2010 Nunthorpe Stakes at York. At 100/1, the horse was the longest priced winner of a British Group 1 for 35 years. Dean Yendall
Dean Yendall (born 1974) is an Australian jockey based in Victoria. Yendall began his career in 1991. As of late May 2023, he has ridden 2,690 winners, including six in Group One races. He is a lightweight jockey, able to ride at 49 kilograms. Jamie Lee Kah (born 7 December 1995) is an Australian jockey. Since October 2020 she has been the world's top-ranked female jockey. In 2020/21 she became the first jockey to ride 100 winners in a Melbourne Metropolitan racing season. Michael Dee is a New Zealand born jockey who currently rides in Victoria, Australia. He is notable for having ridden the winners of a number of Group One races. Racing career Michael's father, Richard Dee was a thoroughbred trainer. Michael started his riding career with the Hawkes Bay trainers Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen before moving to Kevin Myers in Wanganui. Michael Moroney is a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He is notable for having trained Brew to win the 2000 Melbourne Cup and many other Group One races in New Zealand and Australia. Robert Hickmott
Robert Hickmott (born 28 January 1969) is an Australian racehorse trainer and former Australian rules footballer, who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). In 2012, he became the first former footballer to train a Melbourne Cup-winning horse. Football From Wangaratta, Victoria, Hickmott originally played for Tarrawingee in the Ovens & King Football League and the Wangaratta Rovers in the Ovens & Murray Football League (O&M). Serpentine (foaled 20 March 2017) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his win in the 2020 Epsom Derby. Craig Williams (born 23 May 1977) is a Victoria, Australia based jockey. He has won multiple Group One, group one races in Australia and worldwide, including the 2019 Melbourne Cup. Williams rode his first race in 1993. In 2011, he almost achieved a unique Australian horse racing triple, in winning the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.
