2022 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival
The 2022 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival was held in Vuokatti, Finland, between 20 and 25 March 2022. The festival was postponed from original dates in February to December 2021. Later it was announced that the games will be moved to 2022 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Vuokatti previously hosted 2001 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival. Opening ceremony The Opening Ceremony was held outside Vuokatti Areena. The Flame of Peace was carried to the stage by former biathlete Kaisa Mäkäräinen and former cross-country skier Matti Heikkinen. It was finally lit by young cross country skier Vilma Nissinen. President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö gave the opening speech and declared the event opened. Vuokatti
Vuokatti is an urban area that is a physically separate part of the municipality of Sotkamo, Finland. It is home to more than 6,000 inhabitants, making it the second most populous urban area in the region of Kainuu, after the main urban area of the municipality of Kajaani. Vuokatti is also the name of the nearby forested hill range and the urban area's train station. The highest hill in the area is the 345 meter high Porttivaara, the second highest being Vuokatinvaara. Vuokatti has a ski resort, sports academy, and the Katinkulta resort. There is also a skiing tunnel, which makes cross-country skiing possible in all seasons, and there are also snowboarding and snowtubing tunnels. Spyros Capralos
Spyros Capralos (, born 15 April 1955 in Athens) is a Greek former water polo player and sports executive. He represented Greece at the 1980 and 1984 Summer Olympics. He has been the president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee since 2009 and the president of the European Olympic Committees since 2021. He has also been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2019. Career Champion of Greece in swimming from 1969 to 1975, Capralos studied economics at the University of Athens, and graduated from INSEAD with an MBA in 1979. Figure skating at the 2022 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival was held from 20 to 25 March 2022 at the Vuokatti Arena in Vuokatti, Finland. Medals were awarded in boys' and girls' singles. To be eligible, skaters must have been born between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2006. On 1 March 2022, the International Skating Union banned figure skaters and officials from Russia and Belarus from attending all international competitions due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
