2022 Atlanta United FC Season
The 2022 Atlanta United FC season was the sixth season of Atlanta United FC's existence, and the fourteenth year that a professional soccer club from Atlanta, Georgia competed in the top division of American soccer. Atlanta United played their home games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Outside of MLS, they participated in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup as defending champions, as the 2020 and 2021 editions of tournament were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Atlanta United FC, commonly known as Atlanta United, is an American professional soccer club based in Atlanta that competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the league's Eastern Conference. Founded in 2014, Atlanta United began play as an MLS expansion team in 2017, as the twenty-second team in the league. It is the first MLS franchise to be based in Atlanta, and the club plays home games at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which they share with the city's National Football League (NFL) franchise, the Atlanta Falcons. Homegrown Player Rule (Major League Soccer)
The Homegrown Player Rule is a Major League Soccer program that allows MLS teams to sign local players from their own development academies directly to MLS first team rosters. Before the creation of the rule in 2008, every player entering Major League Soccer would have to be assigned through one of the existing MLS player allocation processes, such as the MLS SuperDraft. MLS roster rules allow a team to sign players to contracts similar to Generation adidas contracts, which do not count against the MLS salary budget and may earn a much higher salary than the league minimum. MLS has since removed this wording from the roster rules. Dylan Castanheira (born May 23, 1995) is an American soccer player who plays as a goalkeeper. Career Youth and college Raised in the Landing section of Roxbury, New Jersey, Castanheira played prep soccer at Roxbury High School, leaving after his junior year to join the academy team of Bristol City in 2012, before returning to the United States in 2014.
