Sandra Nyaira
Sandra Nyaira was a Zimbabwean investigative journalist. Communications and public information officer at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Nyaira worked for Voice Of America (VOA) in Washington, DC. Her work was also featured in the ''London Times'''', The Guardian'' and ''The British Journalism Review''. Nyaira rose to fame after she became the first woman in Zimbabwe to take a leadership role in the newsroom at the age of 26 and also became more popular after she was arrested for posting an article exposing corrupt officials. In April 2001, she wrote articles accusing Robert Mugabe and the then parliamentary speaker Emmerson Mnangagwa of corruption, and again, she was charged with criminal defamation that year. Zimbabwe National Army
The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) is the primary branch of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces responsible for land-oriented military operations. It is the largest service branch under the Zimbabwean Joint Operations Command (JOC). The modern army has its roots in the Rhodesian Army, which was raised between 1963 and 1964 after the breakup of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. A ''Joint High Command'' created in March 1980 to oversee integration of the formerly belligerent Rhodesian Security Forces, Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA), and the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) officially established the Zimbabwe National Army in late 1980, nearly a year after the end of the Rhodesian Bush War. Ahmed Bilal Shah
Ahmed Bilal Shah (died 25 June 2021) was a Pakistani-Zimbabwean medical practitioner and television personality who was a presenter on ZBC TV. Career and background Ahmed Bilal Shah was born in Pakistan. He relocated to Zimbabwe in 1982 then started his medical practice in 1987 working at Parirenyatwa Hospital. He then proceeded to work in high density suburbs of Harare and he was the first foreign doctor to work in the country's high density areas. During that period, Shah went to schools to deliver lectures on good health practices. In early 90s, Shah met one of Zimbabwe's television journalists, Reuben Barwe, who organised his first ZBC TV interview on health issues. From then, an idea for his own TV show emerged. Janice McLaughlin
Janice McLaughlin (February 13, 1942 – March 7, 2021) was an American Catholic nun, missionary, and human rights activist. While working as the press secretary for the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in the 1970s, she was imprisoned by the white minority government in Rhodesia for exposing atrocities and human rights violations committed against the country's black citizens. She was placed in solitary confinement and, after intervention from the Vatican and the United States federal government, she was deported to the United States. She returned two years later to the newly established country of Zimbabwe to create an educational system, at the request of Prime Minister Robert Mugabe. In her later years she served as the president of the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic in New York and worked as an anti-human trafficking activist. Zimdancehall
Zimdancehall is a subgenre of reggae/dancehall music from Zimbabwe. The traditional way of message delivery is through chanting. Zimdancehall became more popular after the fall of the Urban Grooves genre. Popular pioneers of Zimdancehall include Winky D, Sniper Storm, Daddie Distress, Ras Tavonga (Jah Bless), Freeman HKD, Lewaz Skattah to mention a few. History Zimdancehall started in the late 1980s with the rising up of local sound systems. The popularity of these recordings led to more studio recordings. By the end of the 90s, a number of local youths were recording singles and albums independently and reggae bands like Cruxial Mix (Trevor Hall) and Black Roots holding regular weekly shows to showcase artists. Soul Muzavazi Musaka, known professionally as Soul Jah Love (22 November 1989 – 16 February 2021), was an award-winning Zimbabwean musician credited as a pioneer of mainstream Zimdancehall. David Katzenstein (January 3, 1952 – January 25, 2021) was an American virologist and prominent AIDS researcher. He was professor emeritus of infectious diseases and global health at Stanford University. Early life and education Katzenstein was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Paradzai Zimondi
Paradzai Willings Zimondi (Paradzai Willings Zimonte) (4 March 1947 – 22 January 2021) was a Zimbabwean independence activist and military officer. Zimondi was considered a hero of the Rhodesian Bush War, Zimbabwean struggle for independence, and he later attained the rank of major general in the Zimbabwe National Army, Zimbabwean army.
