2021 In Irish Television
The following is a list of events relating to television in Ireland from 2021. Events * 11 January – RTÉ's ''Home School Hub'' makes a return as schools in Ireland return to remote learning because of the pandemic. * 14 January – It is reported that a petition calling for RTÉ to remove '' The Angelus'', which precedes the evening '' RTÉ News: Six One'', has been signed by 2,200 people. * 15 January – The National Lottery and RTÉ confirm that the Saturday night gameshow ''Winning Streak'' will not be returning for the foreseeable future due to "ongoing restrictions related to Covid-19". * 28 January – Boxer Katie Taylor is named the 2020 RTÉ Sports Person of the Year, the second time she has won the award. Television In Ireland
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012. Digital satellite (from Sky Ireland, Saorsat and other European satellite service providers are available) and digital cable (from Virgin Media Ireland) are also widely used. The Irish satellite fill-in service (Saorsat) is via Ka-Sat using the Irish KA band spot and has been available since June 2011. While many people receive their television via Saorview, which is broadcast by 2RN, more than half subscribe to multichannel television networks. The biggest single multichannel television network in Ireland is Sky Ireland, which broadcasts digital satellite television services. Matt Cooper (Irish Journalist)
Matt Cooper (born 21 July 1966) is an Irish journalist, author, television presenter and radio presenter of ''The Last Word (radio show), The Last Word'' on Today FM. He is also a former editor of the ''Sunday Tribune''. Early life Cooper was born in Cork in 1966 and was educated at the The North Monastery, North Monastery school and later at University College Cork. As well as radio, sport was another early passion. Cooper played rugby with Sunday's Well and later captained the under-20s team. He also had a fondness for GAA, and played Gaelic football and hurling for the Bishopstown GAA club. He supports Leeds United F.C., Leeds United. He is a former editor of the ''Sunday Tribune'', appointed in September 1996, as well as a former business editor of the ''Irish Independent''. Rachael Blackmore
Rachael Blackmore (born 11 July 1989) is an Irish jockey who competes in National Hunt racing. In 2021, she became the first female jockey to win the Grand National in the 182-year history of the race. She also became the first woman to be leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival with six victories, including the Champion Hurdle, in 2021. The following year she became the first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Blackmore's achievements saw her named the 2021 RTÉ Sports Person of the Year and the BBC World Sport Star of the Year. National Hunt Racing
In horse racing in the United Kingdom, France and Republic of Ireland, National Hunt racing requires horses to jump fences and ditches. National Hunt racing in the UK is informally known as "jumps" and is divided into two major distinct branches: hurdles and steeplechases. Alongside these there are "bumpers", which are National Hunt flat races. In a hurdles race, the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles; in a steeplechase the horses jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jump or an open ditch. In the UK the biggest National Hunt events of the year are generally considered to be the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Saorview
Saorview ( ) is the national digital terrestrial television (DTT) service in Ireland. It is owned by RTÉ and operated by 2RN. The service began operation on 29 October 2010 on a trial basis with a full launch on 26 May 2011. By legislation it was required to be available to approximately 90% of the population by end of October 2010 in a public testing capacity and nationwide by December 2011. The national public launch was preceded by a public information campaign, which began on 15 March 2011, with television and radio advertising beginning on 17 March 2011. Saorview was officially launched on 26 May 2011 by Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte and the service became the primary source of broadcast television in Ireland following the ending of analogue transmissions on 24 October 2012. The Late Late Toy Show
''The Late Late Toy Show'' is an annual, special edition of the Irish chat show '' The Late Late Show''. Airing annually on RTÉ One near the end of November or early December to coincide with the holiday shopping season, the ''Toy Show'' showcases the popular toys of the year, as presented by the host and demonstrated by various children on-stage, along with appearances by celebrity guests. Since its first presentation in 1975, the ''Toy Show'' has become a cultural institution in Ireland; it is often the most-watched programme of the year on Irish television (and its overall viewership has increased steadily in recent years), and being featured on the ''Toy Show'' has been said to have a major boost to sales of a product heading into the Christmas season. Dancing With The Stars (Irish Series 5)
''Dancing with the Stars'' returned for a fifth series on 9 January 2022 on RTÉ One. This was the first series in two years after the show was put on a year-long hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. On 12 November 2021, it was announced that the show would return in the New Year with Nicky Byrne and Jennifer Zamparelli returning as hosts for a fifth and third series, respectively. It was also confirmed that Brian Redmond and Loraine Barry return as judges, however, Julian Benson did not. Armenian-born choreographer and creative director, Arthur Gourounlian joined the judging panel in Benson's place. It was also confirmed that the series would start with twelve celebrities, rather than eleven as it had been for the previous four installments. ''Dancing with the Stars'' is an Irish reality television series, airing on RTÉ One that started on 8 January 2017, and is currently hosted by Jennifer Zamparelli and Doireann Garrihy. The show is based on the original UK version, ''Strictly Come Dancing'' and is part of the ''Dancing with the Stars'' franchise. The judging panel consists of Arthur Gourounlian, Loraine Barry and Brian Redmond. and formerly Julian Benson from seasons 1–4. Production In August 2016, it was confirmed that RTÉ One would broadcast an Irish version of ''Dancing with the Stars'', which would replace the successful ''The Voice of Ireland'', which was cancelled in order for the broadcaster to order the new show. RTÉ Player
RTÉ Player is an on demand video service provided by Irish public media broadcaster RTÉ. The service provides live and recorded RTÉ television programmes, and content exclusive to the player as well as content from other international broadcasters. The player is available in two formats: one for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and another for international audiences. The service provides news, current affairs, entertainment, sport, local and international dramas, and allows viewers to watch programmes from 7 to 21 days after they are broadcast. History RTÉ Player was launched on 21 April 2009. On 2 September 2011, RTÉ announced it would launch a similar platform of its digital radio stations under the name "RTÉ Radio Player". Keelin Shanley
Caoilfhionn Shanley-Ferguson (24 August 1968 – 7 February 2020), also known as Keelin Shanley, was a journalist, newsreader and presenter with RTÉ, Ireland's national radio and television station, where she had presented the '' Six One News'', alongside Caitríona Perry from January 2018 until her death in February 2020. Early life The daughter of Derry Shanley and his wife Orna, Keelin Shanley grew up in Monkstown with her siblings. She studied biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin.
