2021 Rome Municipal Election
Municipal elections took place in Rome, Italy, on 3 and 4 October 2021, with a runoff round on 17 and 18 October 2021. Open for election were the post of Mayor of Rome and the 49 seats of the City Council of Rome, as well as the presidents and councils of each of the fourteen urban subdivisions (''municipi''). Roberto Gualtieri of the Democratic Party (PD) was elected Mayor, winning in the runoff against centre-right independent Enrico Michetti with just over 60% of the vote. The incumbent mayor since 2016, Virginia Raggi of the Five Star Movement (M5S), was defeated after failing to qualify for the runoff. Electoral system The voting system is used for all mayoral elections in Italy's cities with a population higher than 15,000 inhabitants. Two-round System
The two-round system (TRS), also known as runoff voting, second ballot, or ballotage, is a voting method used to elect a single candidate, where voters cast a single vote for their preferred candidate. It generally ensures a majoritarian result, not a simple plurality result as under First past the post. Under the two-round election system, the election process usually proceeds to a second round only if in the first round no candidate received a simple majority (more than 50%) of votes cast, or some other lower prescribed percentage. ''Il Tempo'' (meaning ''Time'' in English) is a daily Italian newspaper published in Rome, Italy. History and profile ''Il Tempo'' was founded in Rome by Renato Angiolillo in 1944. At the initial phase the newspaper was a conservative publication and had an anti-communist stance. The paper publishes the Rome edition (available nationally) and other five local editions ( Latina, Frosinone, Northern Lazio, Abruzzo and Molise). In 1996 the former owner, Caltagirone Editore, sold the newspaper to the Italian builder Domenico Bonifaci. On 4 October 2007 the paper switched from broadsheet format to Berliner. Nicola Zingaretti
Nicola Zingaretti (; born 11 October 1965) is an Italian politician who served as President of Lazio and was Secretary of the Democratic Party from March 2019 until March 2021. During the 1990s, he was a prominent European youth leader, serving as National Secretary of the Left Youth, the youth-wing of the Democratic Party of the Left and as President of the International Union of Socialist Youth. The Senate of the Republic ( it, Senato della Repubblica), or simply the Senate ( it, Senato), is the upper house of the bicameral Italian Parliament (the other being the Chamber of Deputies). The two houses together form a perfect bicameral system, meaning they perform identical functions, but do so separately.
