Godolphin and Appleby were winning the race for the second time, having taken the prize with Masar in 2018. The Derby Stakes, also known as the Epsom Derby or the Derby, and as the Cazoo Derby for sponsorship reasons, is a Group 1 flat horse race in England open to three-year-old colts and fillies. It is run at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey on the first Saturday of June each year, over a distance of one mile, four furlongs and 6 yards (2,420 metres). It was first run in 1780. It is Britain's richest flat horse race, and the most prestigious of the five Classics. It is sometimes referred to as the "Blue Riband" of the turf. Gear Up (foaled 8 March 2018) is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of the leading two-year-old colts in Europe in 2020 when he won three of his four races including the Group 3 Acomb Stakes in England and the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in France. Background Gear Up is a bay horse with a white star with a white sock on his left hind leg bred in Ireland by Jim Bolger. In October 2019 he was consigned to the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale and was bought for €52,000 by the trainer Mark Johnston. He entered the ownership of the Teme Valley 2 syndicate, and was taken into training by Johnston at Middleham Moor, North Yorkshire. It is run over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres) on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket in late April or early May. History The original version of the Newmarket Stakes was established in the early 19th century. It was usually held on the final day of the venue's First Spring meeting in late April or early May. Autumn Stakes (Great Britain)
The Autumn Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old horses. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in October. History The event was established in 1987, and it was originally held at Ascot. The inaugural running was abandoned because of a waterlogged course. For a period the race held Listed status, and it was promoted to Group 3 level in 2003. The Autumn Stakes was transferred to Newmarket in 2011. It became part of a new fixture called Future Champions Day but from 2014 it moved to be run at the same fixture as the Cesarewitch Handicap. Since 2015 it has formed part of the revamped Future Champions Festival at Newmarket. The leading horses from the race sometimes go on to compete in the Racing Post Trophy. The Beresford Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Ireland open to two-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September or October. History The event was sponsored by Panasonic in the mid-1980s, and during this time it held Group 2 status. Juddmonte Farms took over the sponsorship in 1988. Its most illustrious winner was Nijinsky in 1969. The race was relegated to Group 3 level in 1992. It regained Group 2 status in 2003. The Cocked Hat Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old colts and geldings. Lingfield Derby Trial
The Derby Trial Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old colts and geldings. It is run over a distance of 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 133 yards () at Lingfield Park in May. History Established in 1932, the event serves as a trial for the Epsom Derby. The first running was won by the subsequent Derby winner April the Fifth. The left-handed track at Lingfield Park is similar to that at Epsom.
