2020–21 Real Sociedad Season
The 2020–21 season was the 111th season in the existence of Real Sociedad and the club's 11th consecutive season in the top flight of Spanish football. In addition to the domestic league, Real Sociedad participated in this season's editions of the Copa del Rey, the Supercopa de España, and also participated in the UEFA Europa League. The season covered the period from 20 July 2020 to 30 June 2021, with the late start to the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. This season was the first since 2007–08 without fellow centre-back David Zurutuza who announced his retirement from football after the previous campaign had concluded. Real Sociedad
Real Sociedad de Fútbol, S.A.D., more commonly referred to as Real Sociedad (; ''Royal Society''), La Real in Spanish, Erreala in Basque, is a Spanish professional sports club in the city of San Sebastián, Basque Country, founded on 7 September 1909. It plays its home matches at the Anoeta Stadium. Real Sociedad won the Liga title in 1980–81 and 1981–82, and finished runner-up in 1979–80, 1987–88, and 2002–03. The club has also won the Copa del Rey three times, in 1909, 1987 and 2020. It contests the Basque derby against rivals Athletic Bilbao. Carlos Fernández Luna (born 22 May 1996) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a forward for La Liga club Real Sociedad. Club career Sevilla Born in Castilleja de Guzmán, Province of Seville, Andalusia, Fernández started playing senior football with Sevilla FC's reserve team at only 17, competing in the Segunda División B. On 18 December 2013, he made his official debut with the main squad, coming on as a substitute for Piotr Trochowski in a 0–2 home loss against Racing de Santander in the round of 32 of the Copa del Rey. Mikel Merino
Mikel Merino Zazón (; born 22 June 1996) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for La Liga club Real Sociedad and the Spain national team. After starting out at Osasuna, he went on to play for Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle United and Real Sociedad. Merino represented Spain in two European Under-21 Championships, winning the 2019 edition. David Zurutuza Veillet (born 19 July 1986) is a Spanish former footballer who played as a central midfielder. He spent his entire professional career contracted to Real Sociedad, with whom he made 303 competitive appearances over 12 seasons, and was also loaned to Eibar in the Segunda División.
