2020–21 Manchester City W.F.C. Season
The 2020–21 season was Manchester City Women's Football Club's 33rd season of competitive football and their eighth season in the FA Women's Super League, the highest level of English women's football. Gareth Taylor was appointed manager ahead of the new season on 28 May 2020, taking over from Alan Mahon who had been put in charge on an interim basis following the departure of Nick Cushing during the previous campaign. Pre-season Competitions Community Shield In August 2020, the FA announced the return of the Women's FA Community Shield for the first time since 2008. The tie was contested between 2019–20 FA WSL winners Chelsea and Manchester City who qualified as reigning 2019 FA Cup winners due to the unfinished nature of the 2019–20 Women's FA Cup. Leandra Faye Little (born 8 November 1984) is an English former professional footballer who most recently played as a defender for Sheffield United of the FA Women's Championship. A former PE teacher, she is the education lead at the Liverpool F.C. Women's Academy and an education welfare officer for The Football Association. Basketball Prior to her football career, Little represented the England women's national basketball team and played for the City of Sheffield Hatters from 2003 to 2007. Lauren May Hemp (born 7 August 2000) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for FA WSL club Manchester City. Gemma Bonner (born 13 July 1991) is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for Liverpool, as well as the England women's national football team. Nick Cushing (born 9 November 1984) is an English football manager who is the head coach for New York City FC in Major League Soccer. Career Manchester City Women Originally joining the club in a junior role in 2008, Cushing worked his way through a succession of coaching positions starting as a schools coach and progressing to the academy setup before transitioning into the club's women's team. Alan Joseph Mahon (born 4 April 1978) is an Irish former professional footballer who played a midfielder and was capped by the Republic of Ireland. Playing career Club career Early career Dublin-born Mahon, who was educated at St. James Street Christian Brothers Secondary School in the Irish capital, joined English Football League club Tranmere Rovers in 1995.
