2020–21 Iraqi First Division League
The 2020–21 Iraqi First Division League was the 47th season of what is now called the Iraqi Premier Division League, the second tier of the Iraqi football league system, since its establishment in 1974. The number of clubs in the league have changed throughout history due to several factors, most recently in this season when the number of clubs increased from 12 to 28 in total. The top team from each group is directly promoted to the Premier League, while a third club can be promoted through play-offs, on the other hand, two clubs from each group are directly relegated to the Second Division League. Iraqi Premier Division League
The Iraqi Premier Division League ( ar, دوري الدرجة الممتازة العراقي) is the second-highest division of the Iraqi football league system after the Iraq Stars League. The league is contested by 22 clubs and is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA). It will be governed by the Iraqi Pro League Association from the 2024–25 season. Each season, the two top-finishing teams in the Premier Division League are automatically promoted to the Stars League. The four lowest-finishing teams are relegated to Iraqi First Division League, First Division League. The number of clubs in the league have changed throughout history, most recently in the 2023–24 Iraqi Premier Division League, 2023–24 season, when the number of clubs decreased from 24 to 22 and the competition's name was changed from First Division League to Premier Division League. The Iraqi football league system, also known as the football pyramid, is a series of interconnected leagues for men's association football clubs in Iraq. The system has a hierarchical format with promotion and relegation between leagues at different levels, allowing even the smallest club the theoretical possibility of ultimately rising to the very top of the system. There are 5 individual levels, containing 26 leagues. It is run by the Iraq Football Association (IFA). History Up until 1973, leagues in Iraq were played at a regional level. Afak Sports Club ( ar, نادي عفك), is an Iraqi football club based in Afak, Al-Qādisiyyah. The team competes in the Iraq Division One. Babil Sport Club ( ar, نادي بابل الرياضي), is an Iraqi football club based in Babil, that plays in Iraq Division One. History Babil Sport Club was founded in 1960. The team has played in the Iraqi Premier League since the start of the tournament in 1974, and They had played for four seasons, and in all of them it had been struggling to stay away from relegation. In the end, they were relegated to the Iraq Division One in the 1978 season. The team returned after eleven seasons, but quickly relegated at the end of the season again.
