2020 LSU Tigers Baseball Team
The 2020 LSU Tigers baseball team will represent Louisiana State University in the 2020 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Tigers played their home games at Alex Box Stadium. On March 11, the Southeastern Conference released a news statement announcing the restriction of fans at all SEC home spring athletic games, including baseball. On March 12, the Southeastern Conference released a new statement announcing the suspension of all athletics until as early as March 30. These announcements came after the COVID-19 pandemic has swept throughout the United States. On March 16, Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards announced the cancelation, closure, and postponements for facilities and events with more than 50 people until April 13, thus stopping all baseball games in the state of Louisiana until that date. Paul Mainieri
Paul Mainieri (born August 29, 1957) is a former baseball coach and second baseman. He played college baseball at LSU, Miami-Dade CC and New Orleans before pursuing a professional baseball career. He then served as the head coach of the St. Thomas Bobcats (1983–1988), the Air Force Falcons (1989–1994), the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1995–2006) and the LSU Tigers (2007–2021). Mainieri coached LSU to the 2009 College World Series Championship. Playing career Mainieri graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in Miami. He started his college baseball playing career in 1976 at LSU. He played for one season, earning a letter, before transferring to Miami-Dade North Community College to play for his father, Demie Mainieri. After one year he transferred to the University of New Orleans where he played for two years and helped the team win two Sun Belt Conference titles and earn an appearance in the 1979 NCAA Division I baseball tournament. Swayze Field
Oxford-University Stadium at Swayze Field is the home of the University of Mississippi Rebels college baseball team, the 2022 NCAA National Champions, and is located in Oxford, Mississippi. It is named in honor of Tom Swayze, a former Ole Miss baseball player and coach. The $3.75 million stadium opened on February 19, 1989, with a double header sweep of Cumberland University. The actual stadium sits on city property off-campus and was built by the City of Oxford, using a 2% Local Tourism Tax on prepared food and alcohol to pay for it. The 2020 Ole Miss Rebels baseball team represented the University of Mississippi in the 2020 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Rebels played their home games at Swayze Field. The final game played by the Rebels was on March 11 against Louisiana–Monroe. The season was suspended following that game due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. The Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic is an annual six-team college baseball tournament held in Houston and hosted by the Astros Foundation. The 15th annual tournament was held at Minute Maid Park in March 2015. It was initially called Astros College Classic from 2001 through 2002, the Minute Maid Park College Classic from 2003 through 2007, and the Houston College Classic from 2008 through 2015.
